The First Church of Christ was organized 21 Nov 1716 at New Milford, Litchfield County, Connecticut and James Lake became a member in 1726. On page 48 of the church records it mentions that his membership was restored in 1734. "At a meeting of the brethren of the church of New Milford holden on the 19th day of October, 1740, to consider the case of James Lake, under the scandal of drunkeness, who was esteemed guilty by all the brethren present, agreed and confessed that said Lake should be dealt with in a disciplinary way according to the rules of the gospel, - that is to say, to be admonished and excommunicated in case of stubborness, - the evidences and the judgement of the court civil here pending, to be proceeded again in 3 or 4 weeks." On 28 Dec 1740, James Lake not attending the worship of God some time before, it was thought fit by the church that if James Lake should refuse to attend the worship, that he should be warned by two brethren, accordingly {he} was by Benjamin Bunnell and Benoni Stebbins to appear at the public worship, to hear his admonition, but did not appear, yet it was read in public {and} sent to him by the said brethren. An undated 1741-2 entry, stating after ye 2nd admonition the said James Lake returned, made his peace with the church and {was} accepted. This was among several cases. James Lake, among others, gave one acre of land to Jonathan Buck to establish a copper trade in New Milford, the deed executed Feb 1730. The family removed to Kent, Litchfield County, where James and Mary purchased land (1:515) 23 Feb 1749/50 from Jehiel Murray. They sold land (1:620) 23 Mar 1751 to William Mallery of Reding, Connecticut and (2:617) on 24 Aug 1759 to Ebenezer Hoit and (3:253) on 1 Mar 1761 to Daniel Terrill and (4:87) on 30 Sept 1765 to son, John Lake and (4:275) on 22 Apr 1769 to Zachariah Noble.
