There was a good article entitled Who Was Othniel Lake, but this is all I have seen anywhere about Amwell Lakes. I am researching the families of: Henry Lake and Anna Swallow William and Lana Lake Aaron and Mary (Danberry) Lake Jacob and Sarah (Sweany) Lake Nicholas and Deborah (Danberry) Lake I have made pretty good progress in the last several years, but have reached a dead end as far as who their ancestors are, and whether they were originally from Amwell, or from Somerset Co. Can anyone help or does anyone have suggestions to offer? What do you know about these LAKEs? In SNELL's "History of Hunterdon & Somerset Cos, NJ" there is a Jacobus LAKE mentioned as a freeholder in Somerset Co in 1779. There is also a Nicholas LAKE mentioned as conveying land to John GORDON on Apr 16, 1739 in Somerset Co. William LAKE is mentioned as being one of 11 men who were named "Overseers of the Highways", and a freeholder and inhabitant of the western presink in Montgomery Tp, Somerset Co in March, 1772. In DEAT's "Marriage Records, Hunterdon Co, NJ" Henry LAKE married Anna SWALLOW Sept 21, 1813 In D'Autrechy's "More Records of Old Hunterdon County" Henry LAKE is mentioned as being the plaintiff in summons #31967 in 1766. In response to Marshall Lake's suggestion that we post our LAKE information again, due to an influx of new members to this list, I'm posting my LAKE genealogy again. Jim LaRue -------------------- The oldest information I have about the Lake family begins with Henry and Anne Lake of East Amwell in Hunterdon Co. Henry and Anna Swallow, married 1813, in East Amwell, Hunterdon Co. Their ages in the census census indicate that both were born about 1790. I do not have parents? names for Henry or Anna. From the 1850 census, I think I have the names of some of Henry and Ann?s children. I based this on proximity and age. They lived close to one another and to Henry and Ann Lake, and they were born after 1813. William Lake, b. 1818. Married to Lana ______ Jacob Lake b. 1820 married to Sarah Sweany 10 Mar 1843 Aaron Lake b. 1824 in Rocky Hill, Montgomery Twp, Somerset Co, NJ Married to Mary Danberry, 27 Apr 1853 Nicholas Lake, b. 1830. Married to Deborah Danberry, 1851. In the 1850 census, only Aaron Lake is listed as living at home with Henry and Ann Lake. ------------------------- Both Aaron and Jacob are my ancestors. I have 2 Lake lines. Line #1: Henry Lake / Anna Swallow Aaron Lake / Mary E. Danberry Bloomfield Lake / Annie E. Brady Mary E. Lake / Daniel LaRue (my grandparents) 2 cousins I met on the internet say that they were told as children that Aaron Lake was ?full blooded Cherokee,? and that his daughter Sadie was ?part indian.? I haven?t found any written evidence of this yet. Lake line #2 Jacob Lake / Sarah Sweany Larehaine Lake / Leonard Brady Annie E. Brady / Bloomfield Lake Larehaine?s name is spelled in the following ways in the census: Larehaine, Larahine, Larie, Laura A., Laran. Depends on the census year, and however the census taker thought he heard the name pronounced, or his best attempt at the spelling. -------------------------------------- Some other information: Birth: James F.
