I believe he is the male age 80-90 in the 1830 Census. There is also a male age 20-30 – do you know who that is? Catherine Lake who married William Berry was born in July 1837 in NJ and died 14 Dec 1908. She was buried in Bordentown Cemetery. In addition to the five brothers who fought in the Civil War, Catherine had two sisters: Euphemia Lake born 21 Apr 1939, died 23 March 1883. She married Jesse Huggins. And Susan Lake born 1858, died 1880. A puzzle in the 1850 Census for John Lake and children is the last entry, Elenor Lake age 60 born in NJ identified as male. I have no idea who this is. I would be interested in the information on Ebenezer Lake in Albany Co., NY.  Perhaps there is a connection to my Lakes. DNA – I don’t know any living Lakes from John’s family. I have taken the test at both Ancestry and Family Tree DNA. Several cousins are also at Ancestry and one at FTDNA. The one at FTDNA also did the Y67 test at my request, He is a male in the Woolverton line and we are trying to identify our connection to the family before 1775. We have a John Woolverton born in 1775 but no parents. It is likely that he was illigitimate and I wanted to rule out that we are named Woolverton because his mother was a Woolverton  (I have seen bastardy records from Hunterdon County, NJ where the child is given the mother’s surname). It appears that my cousin Thomas Woolverton does match other males in the Woolverton Project so I think that our John’s father was a Woolverton. I do have another Lake connection – In 1946, my Mother’s sister Alma Woolverton married Edward W. Lake 1923-1992. I have traced his Lake line back to John Lake, Sr. and Ann Spicer. Edward was the son of Oliver and Augusta Lake. These should give you some information on the children of my John and Susan Lake. As to the parents of John Stryker Lake, in 2020, I contacted Annette Truesdell and asked for her opinion. She said  “the only thing that makes sense to me (through a process of elimination of the MANY James and Johns) is your John S. Lake being the son of the James Lake, Son of John Stryker Lake, and grandson of Jacobus Lake.” I have not found documentary evidence of this connection, but it makes sense to me also. As to his mother being Rachel – maybe a mistake in the marriage record of John and Letitia Lake????? I did find in the 1850 Census in  (Moorestown) Chester, Burlington County. NJ a Rachel Lake age 76 born PA living with William L Challis and wife Maryann and Job W. Folwell and wife Rachel. I did some searching on the Fowell name thinking maybe Rachel Fowell was a daughter of Rachel Lake, but no proof – yet.   Hope this helps, Jean Sent from Mail [go.microsoft.com] for Windows   From: Marshall Lake Sent: Sunday, August 28, 2022 11:28 AM To: jeanbanowit@aol.com Subject: RE: LAKE Hi Jean, I wanted to ask you about the parents of John Stryker LAKE (b c1801).  I have a large database of New Jersey LAKEs but I don't have a James LAKE who married a Rachel.  Do you have any info about them? There have been several STRYKER-LAKE connections in NJ, and there have been at least 5 male LAKEs with the middle name of Stryker including another John Stryker LAKE.  This John Stryker LAKE (1747 - ?) was the son of Jacobus LAKE & Styntje STRYKER, baptized in Middlesex Co, and married Ann HEATH.  Perhaps John Stryker LAKE (b c1801) is connected to this family.  I have only two children for John Stryker LAKE & Ann HEATH: James and Mary.  James (1773 - 1850/1) married Sarah ------ and had children:  Mary F & John J. Tell me more about John and Susan LAKE, and their children.   Marshall   On Sun, 28 Aug 2022, jeanbanowit@aol.com wrote: > Hi, > > Yes, I am still researching my Lake family. Still looking for the parents of John Stryker Lake born around 1801. He married first Susan Alcott born around 1807 in PA and died 5 April 1850 in NJ. She was the daughter of Jacob and Susan Alcott. John Stryker Lake married second on March 15.1851 Letitia Schenck born around 1816. According to "New Jersey Marriages 1678-1985" This second marriage listed John's parents as James and Rachel Lake. I have found lots on John and Susan Lake's 5 sons who fought in the Civil War. My ancestor was John and Susan's daughter Catherine Lake born in July 1837. She married William Berry. A news account in the Trenton State Gazette 23 December 1876 says that John Stryker Lake died after taking arsenic, He had been attending a sick friend, Aaron Carlile, who died. John was afraid that he may have caught a disease from his friend. He went to the drug store and bought a disinfectant to wash his hair and one-half ounce of arsenic.  Jean Banowit
