1. Free Negroes in Middletown Township, Monmouth County, NJ Posted by: july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Wed Dec 6, 2017 2:34 pm ((PST)) Tax Rateables for Middletown, 1795, Book 1155, p. 17 lists a "Joseph Robins: 1 single man" under a column that names 22 other free black taxpayers. The first appearance of entries labeled "Free Negroes" in Middletown Township began in Oct. of 1779 & continued through to 1797. The name of Joseph Robins only appears one time in 1795. I'm assuming that Joseph Robins had reached the age of 21 by 1795 since his name doesn't appear as a taxpayer before that date. Where did he go after 1795? Did he die or migrate to another state? Who was Joseph Robins & what was his relationship to the Monmouth County, NJ Robins family? Posted by: july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Wed Dec 13, 2017 8:34 am ((PST)) This is some additional information on my search for Joseph Robins free black man living at Middletown in 1795. John Robins is on the Middletown 1784 tax list. I haven't located another Robins or Robbins family living there in 1784 or 1795. John Robins: 135 improved acres; 2 horses; 3 cattle; 1.16.1 pounds; 5 whites, 1 black. Possibly Joseph Robins is the one black person listed with the John Robins family in 1784. I have completed a search of cemetery records in the Middletown area & couldn't find a record for Joseph Robins. If he wasn't deceased by 1796, he may appear in another state.
