They were father and son from Sussex Co. and both joined the NJ Volunteers in the Rev War.  They were in the 5th battalion, which was recruited in Sussex Co.  In 1778, this battalion was merged with the 1st battalion and thereafter was called the 1st battalion.  James Shaw's Co. was the one both John Smiths were in. However, John Smith Jr was taken prisoner in August 1777 and John Smith Sr. "deserted" in November 1778. But I'm still looking at the muster rolls to see who is around and to see if John Smith Sr ever rejoins. While looking at the muster roll for 11 Sept 1780, I found an Isaac Robins!  I've looked at every muster roll for this company from 1777 to this date in 1780 (so far) and this is the first time I've seen a Robins!  I don't know which Isaac he is. But I think we should make a note of him. See:   https://data2.archives.ca/microform/data2/dm13/d13/006003/c-3873/pdf/c-3873-00915.pdf [data2.archives.ca] He's on line 6. The PDF is easiest to read. But the full page and "film" is at: https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/mass-digitized-archives/british-military-naval-records-documents/Pages/item.aspx?PageID=1838961 [www.bac-lac.gc.ca] Indexes to these muster rolls is at:  https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/mass-digitized-archives/british-military-naval-records-index/Pages/british-military-naval-records-inde x.aspx [www.bac-lac.gc.ca] I know neither of you have reason to believe your ancestors were Loyalists. BUT...keep in mind not every Loyalist went to Ontario after the war. :-)
