from Kris Hall John Charles Lake b. Washington Twp., Warren Co. Posted: 08 Sep 1999 5:00 AM Classification: Query Surnames: Lake, Caul Hello- I'm trying to track down information on my gr-gr-gr grandfather and his family. His name was John Charles LAKE, and the information I have says he was born on 18 Dec. (?) 1786 in Washington Twp. in what was then Sussex Co., now Warren Co. He is buried in Old Mansfield Woodhouse Presbyterian Cemetery in Mansfield Twp. His son, Charles Lake, b. 18 Dec. 1825 in Mansfield Twp., Warren Co., left NJ about 1845 for N. IL where he met his wife, Priscilla Hancock, b. Cornwall, Eng. 1832. They left IL via covered wagon, buried their first two children on the wagon trail, and arrived in CA in 1852. Charles' death cert. says his mother was named "Sarah", but I can find no record of that marriage. I have found a m. between a John Lake & Susan Caul on 3 Jan 1817 in Warren Co. and perhaps that is the correct one. Charles was one of 8 children, but the only sibling's name I can find is Catherine Lake, who m. Zachariah D. Hutchison in 1851 in Warren Co. I do not know who John Charles Lake's parents were, or where they were from. I know that there were LAKEs in other parts of NJ but I've not been able to tie the families together. Washington Twp. does not have birth records for either John or Charles, and though they suggested I contact the State Archives, both dates are earlier than their start date of 1838. Can anyone help? I'd love to hear from you.
