At the time of Steven's birth in 1972 she would have lived in Lorton, Va. He was told his father had strawberry blond hair and he remembers he had a motorcycle he took him for a ride on when he was 4 and he fell off. That's the last time he saw his Dad, he can't really remember his face and his Mom didn't really like talking about him. I'm finding hints for Virginia and New Jersey and would like to find family/friends to verify these are from the Charles Kelson he's looking for. From what I'm gathering his father's family may have never known he existed. Steven's DNA is on ancestry but with so little to go on and only one name we haven't had any luck. I believe they may be siblings. Elizabeth is my 4th great grandmother. She married Charles Cowell/Cowel/Cowl in 1825 (two dates exist, with no documentation for either.) Elizabeth may be identified as Elizabeth Snyder, but two children's death certificates give her surname as Williamson. John Williamson married Catharine Cowell/Cowel/Cowl, Charles's younger sister, in 1827 in Greenwich. Charles Cowell died in Stewartsville in 1846. Elizabeth moved the family to Michigan, and later married a James Dewitt. Her obituary reads, in part, "Elizabeth Dewitt was born 8 Feb 1808, in Pennsylvania, and died Jul 12, 1891 at Rochester, Michigan. In early life she with her parents settled in New Jersey, where she was reared in the faith of the early Methodists." I've been unable to discover where in PA, and only have one clue to the identity of either parent. In the 1850 census, her son Charles Wesley Cowell (C Weasley Cowel) is enumerated with a Nancy Williamson, 64, in Bethlehem, Hunterdon, NJ. They were enumerated with Joseph & Elizabeth Smith, aged 65 & 63, as well as a Mary (Eick ) Alpaugh, 49. No known relation to the other people in the home. In the 1860 census, Nancy is in Franklin, in the home of Elisha and Catharine Wilever, aged 73. Elisha and Catharine are both 60. No known relation. Unable to find her after this. I believe Nancy Williamson may be the mother of Elizabeth and John. John H Williamson married Catharine Cowell. There seems to have been 2? children born/died prior to the 1850 census. In that census, there are three daughters: Ann E aged 11, Sarah C aged 9, and Emeline aged 6. Ann (1838-1906) married William B Housel in Asbury in 1857. I thought Sarah C disappeared into space after this census, but I found a marriage for Sarah C Williamson to Phillip A Young at Greenwich in 1862. There are more than one Sarah C Williamson in this time and area. Unfortunately, I can't find anything beyond the marriage (which I only found on the State Archives site). Emeline, as well as her mother, appear to have died the same day- or within short proximity of one another- in Feb 1871 as death records place them in Little York, Hunterdon, NJ. I searched the 1870 census for them in Warren or Sussex and came up with nothing. John H Williamson, other than his marriage record, and subsequent appearance in the 1830 (Greenwich) and 1850 (Franklin) censuses, is a complete mystery. Though it says he was born in NJ in 1800/1801, he may have been born in PA, like Elizabeth was. Or the parents went back and forth. I've been all over Ancestry, Familysearch, NJGenweb, State Archives, and any other site I can find that I think might help, and am coming up with little to nothing to take this line back farther. Mary Ann was the first wife of Joseph and they had 4 or 5 children. Mary Ann died in 1877 and Joseph remarried, to Emma, and they had 4 or 5 more children. Now things get very confusing. Joseph is listed on various trees as being the son of Robert D Melroy born 1791 and Eleanor Cole. I have seen two different birth and death dates for Robert D. Melroy, so I have no idea which is correct, or if there were two Roberts who are getting mixed up? Robert himself is said to be the son of William Melroy and Mary Burkitt (Jones?), of Scotland. Or the son of John Milroy and Martha Bruce. Or the son of John Melroy and 'Nancy'. Or the son of William McElroy and Priscilla Jones. Or the son of John Melroy and Mary Eyker. Does anyone have any idea who his parents actually were? Any information is very gratefully received! Best wishes, Melissa Hello! The date of death on his tombstone is July 7, 1877 and I have found his will and testament dated the day before he died, but can't find anything else. I've been to the Archives in Trenton and have been unable to locate anything related to him at all. He and his wife, Eliza (or Elizabeth Foster) Coyne came to the US in 1865 via New York with their 3 boys (John, Francis and Patrick). They are in the 1870 Census in Phillipsburg, Warren, NJ. Recent research shows that on his boys baptismal records, he is listed as John, Roderick or Rodger in Ireland. They lived right over the river from Easton, PA. Any help in finding an obit, death certificate or anything that can provided his death information would be great. I've also been to the local church and I was able to get them to provide me with the baptism of 1 female child, but apparently there were 11 total and I can only account for 7. First, let me provide you with the known facts: 1. My great-great-great-grandfather Joseph Clark Warne was born in Warren County, NJ on June 14, 1807. Please find attached: a. Family Bible Birth Record – from the Warne Family Bible providing secondary proof of the birth date b. page 515 of the published “Warne Genealogy in America” – providing background information on Joseph. It is noteworthy that he is in a separate section of the publication, and not include with the other Warne family members from NJ. c. Son James William Warne’s death certificate, listing his father’s birthplace as New Jersey. 2. Second, a letter from my great-grandfather Leonidas (Ott) Warne telling his version of the store of how Joseph ended up in Ohio: a. “I can't give you any information about the Warne family further back than my grandfather Joseph C. Warne. He came to this country while a small boy with a colony of Quakers and settled in the Buchanan (Ohio) neighborhood. His step father and him disagreed and he ran away from home and never saw his mother or any of his people except his half brother uncle Ben. He made a visit here while my father was a small boy. He married Mary Cussins and made shoes for quite a long time.......my father made a trip to New Jersey where his father's people were suppose to be. He didn't learn much about our people the Warne Family as the old ones were all dead and gone." b. From this letter we can infer several things: i. Joseph’s father likely died sometime after Joseph’s birth in 1807 ii. Joseph’s mother remarried iii. Joseph’s mother had a son named “Ben” with her second husband. “Ben” could not be older than Joseph unless this was his mother’s 3rd marriage, and Joseph was a child of her 2nd marriage. 3. Third, a letter written home from James William Warne to his father Joseph Clark Warne in 1863: a. "Well father a few words to you I receive 2 months pay a few days ago and send an order in this for 20 dollars he ran out of money and had to go back to the Point before he could pay us the balance but we never know when he will get back I thought I would send you the $20 with out waiting for the balance. W Warne To: J. C. Warne Please let me know in the next if you ever got the clothes that I sent home." i. This letter also mentions Ben, who was still alive in 1863 ii. A reference is also made to a cousin Emma with the last name of “Taylor” My request would be for any information about a male Warne (sometimes spelled Warren) who fits the following facts: • Had at least one son • Died sometime around 1810-1820 • Lived in Warren County • Wife remarried and had a son named Ben, who was still alive in 1863 • Link to the last name “Taylor” If anyone has any information, I would love to hear from you!! It was in the Belvidere Apollo newspaper near Phillipsburg, Warren County, NJ. May 2, 1884 MURDERING HER BABIES MRS. BARNET KILLS HER TWO LITTLE CHILDREN AND CUTS HER OWN THROAT Between eight and nine o’clock Saturday morning Mrs. Annie Amelia Barnet, the wife of David Barnet, of Phillipsburg, murdered her two children by cutting their throats with a razor and then cut her own throat. The mother is alive, but will probably die. Barnet, who lived in Phillipsburg in his youth and whose mother is an old resident of that city, married in the western part of Pennsylvania and lived in Pittsburg until a few months ago. He then lost his situation, owing, it is said, to the floods, and with his young wife and two pretty little children returned to his old home, expecting to better his condition. He was unable to secure steady employment, but having saved up some money and occasionally getting work his family were comfortably provided for. Mrs. Barnet was, however; at times very much distressed by her husband’s inability to get a permanent situation and often appeared very melancholy. She was a strong, apparently healthy, fine-looking woman and no one ever thought her crazy or imagined her capable of committing a crime. She was to all appearances as honest, affectionate wife and fond mother. For the past few days, Mr. Barnet has been at work on a new house that is being erected near his home. A little before seven o’clock Saturday morning he went to his work, leaving his wife apparently in rather better spirits than usual. Just what happened between the time Mr. Barnet left home and the time of the tragedy is not fully known. About half-past eight o’clock Willie, the eldest child, who was two years and a-half old, a bright, pretty little fellow and a great favorite with all who knew him, was at a neighbor’s house playing with some children, when his mother called him to come home and have his face washed. Three ladies saw her call the child home, but of course suspected nothing wrong. Two or three minutes afterwards the neighbors were startled by a piercing scream coming from the Barnet residence. One woman ran to the front and another to the back door. The door was locked, but Mrs. Barnet unlocked it and appeared before the frightened women cover with blood. With her left arm she clasped her five-month-old baby to her breast and in her right hand she held a razor, dripping with blood. It afterwards appeared that when Mrs. Barnet called Willie home she locked the door, seized him, threw him on the bed and cut his throat from ear to ear. He bled to death in ten minutes. When the women saw the wild-eyed, desperate woman, her clothing covered with blood, they fled, screaming with fright, and gave the maniac-for such she is now believe to be-an opportunity to finish her terrible work. When they returned, a few minutes later, with some men and the husband, who had been summoned, Mrs. Barnet lay beside her children on the bed with the blood spurting from two terrible gashes, one on each side of the throat. Willie was just gasping his last breath. Every effort was made to save the baby’s life. Physicians sewed up the wounds and did everything in their power for the little one, but it died at night. When the neighbors and Mr. Barnet rushed into the house Mrs. Barnet exclaimed “Oh I have killed by babies; I couldn’t help it” and sank into unconsciousness. After her wounds had been dressed and restoratives applied she railed, but became to all appearances a maniac. She shrieked and raved and made desperate efforts to tear off the bandages and tear open the wounds to her throat. She is a powerful woman and in her frantic spells it took six strong men to hold her and prevent her from destroying what small chance of life she had left. Once in one of her paroxysms the stitches in her throat burst and the blood flowed freely. Loss of blood rendered her less hard to manage, but she still had to be very closely watched. The razor with which the terrible work was done was found under a chair, where Mrs. Barnet had thrown it after she cut her own throat. Mrs. Barnet is about twenty-five years old. She came from a good family in the western part of Pennsylvania. Her maiden name was Annie Amelia Scott and she was married to Mr. Barnet four years ago, at her home at Beaver Falls. Her father and mother are both dead. She has a married sister in Cleveland. She also has relatives and friends in Pittsburg. She and her husband lived happily together, but since they came to Phillipsburg she often worried because her husband died not have steady employment, often urged him to return to Pittsburg and was at times moody and sad. It is believed that her reason was dethroned before she murdered her children and tried to kill herself. Mr. Barnet’s mother, who is in good circumstances, says that the family has not wanted for anything, but has always been well provided for. The appearances of the house and the testimony of the neighbors confirm this. Mr. Barnet, who is a responsible, industrious and sober man, is nearly crazy over the calamity that has befallen on him. I came across this article in case anyone is interested. He was married to Maria Dicz in Alpha, Warren, NJ in July 1908. His father was Joannes Pokrivcsak(F:Daniel Pokrivcsak M:Maria Szikora) born1837 and mother was Catharina Dzedzics-Zolnirtsky (F:Blasius Dzedzicz M:Eva Dzedzicz Zsolrnitsik) born 1843. Stephan was born in 1881 in Hranicne or Graniszto. The witnesses at the wedding were a Wavrek Sikora and Joseph & Matrona Stasak. He was stated in the manifest in October 1907 as coming to see his brother Voytek(Adalbertus) who was born in 1884 in Martins Creek. Peter Pokrivcak who is his cousin came over on the voyage as well and was listed as coming to see his cousing Janos. I have had no luck in finding anything on Adalbertus other than his immigration record. I am curious if he went by another name and had children in the US. Other siblings of Stephan were Mathias born 1866, Maria born 1869, and Michal born 1876. It is listed that Stephan left behind a wife Katerina in Hranicne. I cannot find a marriage record for them as she must have been from another town. I am curious if they had any children together. Thank you! The Wildrick history doesn't have any more information on her, other than that she was unmarried in 1830. Asa Rounsifer was her child, who listed her on his death certificate. She is believed to have died in Roxbury, NJ around 1860 based on a family story. Asa's parents are believed to never have married, and his father is presumed Evan Rounsavell. Has anyone come across more information on this Mary? Has anyone read through the several wills mentioned in the NJ Index to the Wills? There are several Wildricks there that may help connect parts of the family. Also, does anyone have a good group of Wildrick DNA tests at any of the DNA sites? DNA cousin checks is a possibility to test the hypothesis. Thank you!
