My 2x-great-grandfather and his wife were each arrested in Brooklyn before the 1898 Greater New York City consolidation and brought before judges. I dream of finding records for them that contain photos (e.g., mug shots), because I have no photos of them. If finding photos isn't possible, I'd still enjoy finding any records detailing their situations. I corresponded with the New York City Municipal Archives and they told me they have a limited collection of "Bertillon cards (mugshots)". I confirmed that their collection doesn't include either of my two ancestors. They also told me they have microfilm records in their reading room of magistrate court and police court records, but I would need to know the place of arrest to narrow down which court they would have been taken to. Please can anyone name for me specifically which agencies/departments/courts/divisions I can contact to request records (especially arrest records or Bertillon cards or mugshots), and what classes of records I should request from them? I'd appreciate learning any address, phone number, email address, web address, etc. to contact. Here is the information I have about each of them, all which comes from newspapers.com articles: 1) Charles Freeman, 1st and 2nd arrests: He was arrested by a Patrolman Boyle of the Brooklyn 9th Precinct on 10/20/1894 for intoxication and fined $10 (I think the same day) by a Justice Quigley. He had knocked over an elderly man while drunk at Lexington Avenue and Sumner Avenue (which is now named Marcus Garvey Boulevard) and I presume he was arrested at that same location. The man died on 10/25 so Charles Freeman (named as George Freeman in one article) was subsequently arrested by Detective Sergeants Bedell and Gilpin of the Brooklyn 9th Precinct on 10/31/1894 for manslaughter, on a warrant issued by a Coroner Kene. I don't know when or where or if there was a trial for manslaughter. The NYC Municipal Archives said they would have higher court records for a manslaughter case; they would be harder to find as I would need to find the case number to search for them, though that should be indicated in the magistrate's record. 2) Charles Freeman, 3rd arrest: I found a newspapers.com article for a George Freeman - I suspect this is actually Charles based on his address and occupation, but I do not know if the newspaper typo'd the name or if he gave a false name to the police and court - fined $3 by Justice Harriman in the Gates Avenue Police Court on 5/11/1895 on a charge of fighting in the streets at Utica Avenue and Prospect Place. If this record really is for my Charles Freeman, then he wasn't imprisoned long or at all from the manslaughter charge. 3) Wilhelmina "Minnie" Freeman (who also used her previous married surname Wittenauer in other, unrelated records), 1st arrest: She was taken to St. Catherine's Hospital for attempted (murder-)suicide on 5/03/1894. She was taken (I think straight from the hospital) to court on 5/04/1894 for arraignment and released to her husband by Justice Watson of the Ewen Street Police Court in Williamsburg. As a humorous aside I'll mention that one newspaper article quotes the judge as saying, "No one who lives in East New York wants to kill himself, not even if they are crazy." I guess it was a fine place to live.... In the case of #1, I know the precinct that arrested him both times and I know the location where was arrested the first time (but I don't know the location he was arrested the second time). Would there be arrest records with mugshots? In the cases of #2 and #3, I have the name of the police court and the date of the arraignment. Would there have been an arrest that could have a mugshot before those arraignments? Thank you for any help! Chris Hello! His wife was Charlotte possibly Frost. I am unable to verify her last name. Her date of birth I believe is around 1832 and dod is 1881 due to being ran over by a train. I am also unable to find a marriage cert. They had 3 children, William born around 1856, Sarah around 1859 and Isaac around 1865 and resided in Huntington, Ny. I am unable to find any information about Alfred(he was a blacksmith) prior to 1860. No information abut Charlotte prior to marriage. Neither are in family trees besides my family's. Nothing on William after 1870 except he was not mentioned as living in Alfreds Obit in 1907 and nothing that can be verified about Isaac after 1880. Speculation is Isaac married Cornelia Rogers but again, it cant be proven. Sarah is my 3rd great grandmother and had 2 husbands, George Mcmaster and my grandfather Edward Boerum and 4 children. I was able to find information about Sarah. I know people have name bibles and am wondering if anyone has come across these names and have information to share with me. LOL). I have tried using the ED Finder from ancestry. and it shows 24-1563. I scrolled through every page and there are a couple listings for 68 McKeever and 74 McKeever Place, but those are all that are shown. I know that in the 1930 Census 88 McKeever Place was known as 88 Cedar Place. I am unsure what the exact date the street name was changed. I tried to search for 88 Cedar Place in Brooklyn, Kings but the results there take me to Westchester County in New York. I am hoping that someone here may have some more insight into finding my family in the 1950 Census. I feel fairly confident that 24-1563 is correct, because when I look on the ED map I can see Ebbets Field in the image. They lived directly across from the from marquee of the stadium and many of them worked for the stadium at one time or another for years, as ushers, running concession stands, parking, etc.. If anyone has any ideas or information where I can find those listings, I would appreciate it very much. The family name I am searching for is Joseph Ryan (wife Helen, stepson Stanley, daughter Loretta, son Joseph (maybe Larry), son John), the other could be listed as Ryan with Mary/Mamie as the head or possibly under Hughes (Thomas, wife Rose and several siblings/children) with Mary Ryan listed as Grandmother. Thanks in advance for any assistance! If I am an idiot and missed them on these pages, I apologize and if you could tell me page numbers where I can find them, that would be greatly appreciated as well! In 1923 his sister-in-law Elizabeth Watterson emigrated to Brooklyn to join him. I don’t find him again until his death on August 28, 1937 in Manhattan. He was born in Ireland and his parents were William Buick and Elizabeth Donnelly. He married Mary Watterson in Ireland in 1918. Would like his death certificate to find out perhaps if he was remarried or had any children in New York. An obituary would be great.
