The undersigned persons liable to be assessed for highway labor in said Town, do hereby make application to you to lay out anew road of the width of three rods, which such road shall be described as follows. Commencing at or near the junction of the roads leading to Manhasset and Flower Hill, thence running an easterly course until it comes to the land of Mrs. Sarah Baxter, thence a northerly course as near a straight line as may be until it meets the road running to Sands Point, to the west of the residence of John H. Treadwell, which said road will pass through the lands of Isaac Covert, Mrs. Sarah Baxter, Thomas Mc Kee, John H. Mc Kee and Thomas Allen, being each and severally affirmed doth say, that the highway proposed to be laid out, is necessary to be laid out, and respectfully ask the Commissioners to lay out the same. The subscribers, freeholders of the Town of North Hemp- [[p. 375]] stead and County of Queens, not interested in the lands through which the road hereafter described is to be laid, nor of kin to thee owners thereof, having met at the store of Thomas Mc Kee in the said Town, and having been first duly sworn have personally examined the route of the highway proposed to be laid out by the application of Benjamin B. Nostrand and others, commencing on the northerly side of the road running from the Bay to Flower Hill, at a point in Covert's woodland, and passing through lands of Mr. Covert and Sarah Baxter, Thomas Mc Kee, John H. Cornwell, Henry Cock and Israel Lake, where it ends at the School House road, also a branch from Thomas Mc Kee's store over his and Sarah Baxter's land to the Sandy Hollow road, and have herd and considered all reasons offered for and against laying out the same, and thereupon do hereby certify to the Commissioners of Highways of said Town, and we are of opinion that such highway is necessary and proper. The within named subscribers, freeholders in the Town of North Hempstead in Queens County, being duly affirmed say, that the above described roads proposed to be laid out on the application of B. B. Nostrand and others, are necessary and proper, and in their opinion such highways are necessary and proper for the use of the public, and request the Commissioners to lay out the same. Survey of the Shore road at Port Washington from Cover'ts land to the School house road near the dwelling of Ed Hyde made Jan'y 11th 1868. Beginning at a point adjoining the northerly side of the highway which runs from Joseph O. Hegeman's to the Steamboat dock at Port Washington, and bearing N. 81o 57 E. 2ch 60¾ from the northwesterly corner of Covert's tenant house, thence N. 16o E 7ch 14, thence N. 31o 50' W 2ch 54, thence N 24o 15' W 2ch 46, thence N. 19o W 2ch 60½, to a point opposite Seaman's shoe shop, and 2 rods from it, thence N 12o 15' W 1ch 91, to a point 15 links from the northwest corner of Thomas Mc Kee's horse sled, and the line of road touches said corner of shed, thence N 53o 40' W 3ch 33, to a point 9 links from the north east corner of John H. Cornwell's Mill, and 1ch 02 from the south east corner of John H. Cornwell's store, thence N. 87o 20' W 1ch 68, to a point opposite the north west corner of J. H. Cornwell's store, and 50 links from it, thence N 53o 30' W 1ch 00, to a point 52 links from a locust tree standing on opposite side of road, thence N 19o 45' W 189, thence N 22o W 4ch 20, to the tie post in front of Velsor's Store, which stands 7½ links from South east corner of main building, and 17 links from South east corner of land to of said store, thence N 31o 45' W 2ch 46. The road was surveyed to this point on its westerly side and to be 3 rods wide on the 1st course, then tapering to two and remaining 2 rods wide, thence on the Easterly side of the road beginning at a point . . ., links opposite to the end of the last course, which makes the road at this point take a square jog to the west of 13½ link, and running N 31o 55' W 3 ch 40, thence N 14o 40' W 3ch 76, to a point 51 links from the South west corner of Henry Cock's tenant house, and 59½ links from the north west corner, thence N [[p. 377]] 28o 25' E 3ch 04, to a point in range with the north side of Henry Cock's tenant house, and 51 links from it, thence N 18o 45' E 1ch 09, thence N 13o 55' W 1ch 82, to the South west corner of shoe shop standing on the land of Israel Lake, thence N 13o 30' W 1ch 22½, to the "School House road." And the Commissioners directed said Israel Lake to round the corner at the intersection of this road now laid out and the School house road in the following manner, starting at the end of the last course and making N 48o 15' E. 73 links the chord of the circle and the middle Ordinate 4 feet to the North. Whereas application has been made to the Commissioners of Highways of the Town of North Hempstead, Queens County, N. Y., to lay out and accept a highway at Port Washington, commencing at a point on the west side of the road running from the Bay to Flower Hill, in Mr. Covert's woodland, passing through Covert's land, the lands of Sarah Baxter, John M. Cornwell, Henry Cock, and over the land of Israel Lake where it ends, at the School House road; also a branch of the same proposed road, running from the Store of Thomas Mc Kee over the land of Sarah Baxter to the Sandy Hollow road, and whereas the said Commissioners have caused the said highway to be surveyed two rods wide, and are proceeding to lay out the same; Now therefore in consideration of laying out and recording such highway of two rods wide by said Commissioners, and of one dollar to me paid, I do hereby release to said Commissioners, and discharge myself from all claims to damages, and [[p. 382]] for value of land taken from me by reason of the laying out of such highway.
