From: "Perry Streeter" To: Cc: "Marshall Lake" , "Berniece Cowan" , "Roma Haenke-Hardy" Subject: Q. Was John Garrison of Hunterdon Co., NJ & Staten Island a Descendant of Gerrit-1 Jansen van Oldenburg? Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2007 22:10:54 -0400 Phyllis: Thank you for confirming that your 2002 email address is still valid so quickly! Based on our correspondence back in 2002, I assumed that Gerrit Jansen van Oldenburg was not a likely candidate for the immigrant ancestor of John Garrison of Hunterdon County, NJ & Staten Island since you did not suggest any possible matches among his descendants. For your reference, here is my document on John and my probable line of descent from him: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/GARRISON.TXT Based on recent correspondence with Berniece Cowan (coped on this message), I now think she may well be correct in speculating that John Garrison, the "immigrant" of Hunterdon County, was the son of Johannes-3 Gerritsen (Jan-2 Gerrits, Gerrit-1 Jansen van Oldenburg) and his wife Hester -----. I have also copied in some other keenly interested descendants of John Garrison, Roma Haenke-Hardy and Marshall Lake. Apparently, there are no children documented for Johannes-3 & Hester (-----) Gerritsen but it certainly would have been logical for them to have named a son John if they had any. The general impression seems to be that Johannes & Hester disappeared from Staten Island by 1714. However, it seems possible that the second baptism record below from the Port Richmond RDC may indicate that Hester (-----) Gerritsen (or perhaps a namesake daughter) served as a baptismal sponsor there for a namesake granddaughter in 1751: 1744 Apr 17; Abram Egbertse, Elisabet Gerresen; Elisabet; 1751 Jul 28; Abraham Egbertse, Elizabet Gerretse; Hester; Hester Gerretse http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrichmo/misc/rdc_pr_baptisms.html The ancestry of Abraham Egbert/se/n (including descent from the Perine family) seems to be established. For example, see... http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=whfogle&id=I6921 However, I haven't had any luck yet in identifying the parents of Elizabet (Gerresen/Gerretse) Egbertse elsewhere. In any case, it seems possible, if not probable, that Johannes-3 & Hester (-----) Gerritsen had children and may still have had ties to Staten Island, even if they no longer resided there. Based on the migration paths of other Hunterdon County families that John Garrison was affiliated with, Monmouth County, NJ might be the next logical place to look for missing links but I haven't had time to do that yet. That John Garrison of Hunterdon County was the son of Johannes-3 & Hester (-----) Gerritsen is also suggested by the following circumstantial bits evidence: a.. John's whereabouts prior to settlement in Hunterdon County are unknown but he moved to Staten Island late in life (going home?) b.. John was the brother-in-law of Duncan Oliphant, who resided on Staten Island prior to settlement in Hunterdon County c.. John's wife, Hannah, may have been a kinsman of Henry-4 Perine (Peter-3, Daniel-2-1) of Staten Island d.. In Hunterdon County, John was affiliated with several other families of Staten Island origin e.. John was affiliated with a German Reformed congregation (getting back to his roots?) f.. John & Hannah named a daughter Hester (in honor of his mother?) Your thoughts on this speculation will be greatly appreciated! I am also in hopes that you have uncovered additional information since you published your article that would help to support or refute this theory. Unless there is strong evidence to refute this theory, it seems like we should focus some energy on finding a direct line male descendant of John & Hannah (-----) Garrison to partake in the following DNA project: http://www.garrisonscompass.com/index.html As long as I'm fishing around, has anything "new" been discovered about the ancestry of Johannes-3 Gerritsen? As you will see in my message to Phyllis Miller, I speculated that Monmouth County might hold the "missing links" for our Garrison line between Staten Island and Hunterdon County. In response to your speculation on James Grover Garrison, look what I found when Googling for James Grover... 1685 Dec. 1. Last Will and Testament of James GROVER senior of Midletown. Letters of administration granted to executors named February 3. I've run out of time to delve deeper tonight but bases on other quick hits via Google there are a lot of interesting points of interconnection between the Grover family of Gravesend, Kings Co., NY & Monmouth, Co., NJ and a lot of the other families from both of these places that you find associated with our Garrison ancestors in Hunterdon Co. OCD in overdrive ;) Perry -----Original Message----- From: Berniece Cowan [mailto:Oluff2@verizon.net] Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2007 12:21 AM To: Perry Streeter Subject: DNA Hi again, and send this on to Roma as I didn't copy off her e-mail address. We had good luck with the Prall DNA--I had one male cousin left, so paid to have his DNA recorded. I had done SO much research on our line, but lacked that one crucial document to prove that we descended from Cornelius and Rebecca Garrison Prall's son John. The DNA results proved it. I have not met Roma, but both she and I are at a disadvantage since we descend from the female line. I used to write to a Chester Garrison in OR many years ago, and he was elderly then. He said he really wasn't interested in genealogy, but felt he should get his lineage to pass down to his children and grandchildren. Weren't you corresponding with a fellow whose surname was Lake? A Thomas Lake took the inventory of Oliphant in 1734, and of Cornelius Prall in 1733 in Amwell, NJ This Cornelius was a younger brother of my Aaron Prall, both sons of Peter Praal of Staten Island There were people named Lake in SI. As far as the Oliphant/Garrison research has gone, all we've accomplished is that now the three of us are on the same page. Had to hash over a number of ideas and misinformation--too many Oliphant kids with the same name. I told them that I am out of ideas and will file my stuff away until someone comes up with a bright idea. Has anyone heard of James Grover Garrison? In 1764 John Garrison and JGG went to court to collect some debts. John had that grist mill and sold it to Johannes Williamson in 1761, so I'm guessing that people still owed him money. I wish I had made a copy of that court paper, but this was early on in my research and I assumed he was a son of John. Never saw his name again, until John moved back to Staten Island. I found 2 references in Staten Island and he uses the full name. Then John's daughter Hester married Richard Christopher, and named their first son John Garrison, and the second James Grover Garrison. I tried to track down the Grover name in the hopes that maybe Mary and Hannah were Grovers. Had no luck with it. If John Garrison is a son of John & Hester, and father was dead by 1713, where did the widow go. Also John, Sr had the younger brother Cornelius, who died in 1713 and left 2 orphan children. Who took them????? Was James Grover a younger brother of our John? Was Hester's maiden name Grover? I'm just thinking of these ideas before I shut up and go to bed. Do you have a document that includes the content of your articles and subsequent additions and corrections that you would be willing to share? In particular, I am eager to understand by what primary sources it can be determined that the Elizabeth Garrison who married Abraham Egbertse was the daughter of Charles Garrison? Several WorldConnect databases indicates that Charles Garrisons' wife was named Hester, without citing any sources. If true, that would certainly indicate that she was the witness at the baptism of a namesake granddaughter. On the other hand, if the parentage of Elizabeth Garrison or the identification of Charles Garrison's wife were based on assumptions, perhaps including a misinterpretation of this baptismal record, that would leave open the possibility that Elizabeth (Garrison) Egbertse was actually a daughter of Johannes-3 & Hester (-----) Gerritsen. Johannes & Hester "should have" named a daughter Elizabeth in honor of his (presumably Dutch) mother, Elizabeth (Gysberts) Garrison. By the way, do you have any theories on who Elizabeth (Gysbert) Garrison's father was? Elizabeth and Johannes "should have" named one their two eldest sons Gysbert in his honor but I haven't found any likely candidates for a potential match. Thank you for identifying another potential match for John Garrison as a son of Frederick Garrison! However, since the name Frederick does not occur again in the Hunterdon County, New Jersey family, I am still betting that we descend from Johannes-3 & Hester. In any case, we must test all hypotheses and I certainly agree--identifying someone from of our Garrison family to participate in the DNA project would be very productive. Finding him will be somewhat challenging since everyone in my little network of researchers working this puzzle descends from lines that "daughtered out" in the colonial era. Your reply has been very helpful and inspiring. I look forward to hearing from you again at your earliest convenience. -----Original Message----- From: PhyllisM19@aol.com [mailto:PhyllisM19@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, April 22, 2007 8:03 PM To: perry@streeter.com; john@garrisonsurveying.com Subject: Re: Q. Was John Garrison of Hunterdon Co., NJ & Staten Island a Descendant of... Hi Perry, You make a strong case. Also a very possible case. I've spent the afternoon on this and my first thought was that the names look to me more like descendants of Gerrit Segers and especially of Lambert Garrison. So I went to my article on this family (NYG&BRecord 124:135-143, 201-203 & 229-230) and on p. 202, #9 iii Elizabeth Garrison, dau of Charles son of Lambert was the one who m. an Abraham Egbertse. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Hester, as you note. I don't know who the Hester G. who witnessed the bapt. of their dau. Hester was, but she surely looks to be some kind of a relative. Also of possible interest to you, I learned after the Segers article was published that Frederick Garrison, #4 son of Gerrit Segers had another child, Jan bap. 19 Sept 1699 at the First Reformed Church of the Raritan. I have nothing further on him. I forwarded your message to John Garrison of Garrison's Compass as I felt he might be able to help. If you have a possible DNA subject from this line, a test could be VERY productive. It has now been shown by DNA that some of those claiming the "Montaubaun" connection were really descendants of Seger Gerrits. This isn't a lot of help, but perhaps a clue for you. Roma may be able to help us out with some research at the FHL in Salt Lake City from time to time. One of the questions that comes to mind is who was Aeltje named in honor of? Assuming that she was the eldest daughter of Jan-2 & Elizabeth (Gysberts) Gerritsen, then Elizabeth's mother was most likely named Aeltje. Of course, Elizabeth's father was either named Gysbert or he descended from someone so named--we don't know if Gysberts was true patronymic or a fixed surname in this case. In considering the latter possibility, I found an interesting (albeit long-shot!) match on my own web site! Hi, I've gone through the very thin folder I've kept on the Segers article (it is not my own line) and can perhaps help a bit. Primary records are pretty thin -- a few wills and photocopies from LDS microfilms, all referred to in the article. Barbara Barth made an addition re Charles and his wife in Vol. 127:216 plus a ref to her article on the Van Sants in the same issue on p. 234. I think I gave you the ref that Peter Christoph added in the same issue as the conclusion of the article. I am pretty sure the info giving the wife of Charles Garrison as Hester ____. came from the same source that propagated the "Montaubaun connection" as I call it. It may be right or again perhaps she did a conclusion jump. The book is The Family of Isaac Garrison 1732-1836 by the Isaac Garrison Family Assoc. 1980. The refs are on pp. 337-338. I'm afraid the genealogist for this book, Irenas Peddicord, deceased, was a bit careless, but she DID have an amazing amount of info. If you don't have access to this I can scan the two pertinent pages, but must warn you that I have marked them up pretty badly. As to proof that Elizabeth who m Egbert was a daughter of Charles, a child of hers is named in the will of Elizabeth's brother, Chas. Jr. As to speculation on the parents of Elizabeth Gysberts, wife of Jan Garrison -- I have wondered if she might be a Van Pelt or Lanen, but nothing to bear it out. And while we are on speculations -- Carsten Carstemsens wife was Annetie Roelofs. Was she possibly the unnamed daughter of the famous Anneke Jans by her first husband Roelof? This child, Annetie was b c 1636? Anneke Jans and Carsten both came from Flekkero. If npothing else it is fun to speculate. Phyllis
