NY Land Records, especially the Argyle Patent https://www.ancestry.com/boards/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.washington/6357 Mon, 10 Aug 2020 16:01:45 GMT The county deeds, mortgages, and indexes are available in digitized format on FamilySearch.org in a collection called "United States, New York Land Records". However, there seem to be gaps in the early records, and in the later records, the original "lot numbers" (for example, the original farm lot numbers in the Argyle Patent) are sometimes not mentioned in the deeds. The descriptions of property are in metes and bounds. Has anyone run across a "parcel index" that indexes the county deeds by town and lot number? Or a dated plat map from the late 1800's that could be used as a reference point to work backwards through the deeds? My research problem involves lot 75 in the Argyle Patent, and the descendants of Duncan McDougall and Janet Calder who first held this lot. After the lot was divided into thirds in Duncan's will (northern third to his son Alexander, middle third to Ronald, and southern third to Dougall), the deeds become increasingly confusing, and there appear to be some errors in the survey data in the descriptions. Somewhere in the middle third, a parcel of about 35 acres that was in the estate of Ronald (Randall) McDougall and his wife Euphemia (Effie) ended up undivided among (at one point, circa 1821-1824) 7 and later 6 (about 1827) of their heirs-at-law, and not all of them have been conclusively identified. The descriptions I have found so far are either extremely vague, or else seem not to account for a couple small pieces, and the dimensions of the known pieces of this part of lot 75 are inconsistent. Progress on this problem has been slow, over about 30 years! Death is a debt _____ HUBBARD, Mary In memory of Mary, wife of Samuel Hubbard Who Died May 31st 1799 In the 70th year of her age. I spent a few days in Fort Ann and Whitehall with my dad, mom, and sister in August 2001 and took notes at some cemeteries. If anyone has a more complete list of this cemetery, I would appreciate the information. - Lynn Stevenson Fisher, lfisher3149@earthlink.net, San Jose, California John Berry born 8 Oct 1798 in NY https://www.ancestry.com/boards/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.washington/6346 Mon, 01 Jul 2019 22:55:46 GMT Greetings, In search of my mother in law's 3x gr grandfather's parents names. In the family bible which we are the keepers, he states he was born 8 Oct 1798. In multiple newspaper accounts he states he was born in Chatham, NY, but Whitehall, NY has been mentioned. He died in Burlington, Chittenden, VT 15 Jul 1873. He married Rachel Whissel around 1822. She had been previously married to Joseph Bateman. John and Rachel had six children. Below is a brief summary of what we have discovered: "The story of John Berry begins with a family bible. Family names are listed in the bible. This is an ordinary beginning of a family, wife and children, but for the case of John Berry, it progresses to an extraordinary event filled life with a rather sad ending. The bible records led to a few historical records, but given the time period that John Berry lived, these records were few in number. It seems that after John Berry’s children were born, he became engaged with the conflict along the Canada–United States border where bands of raiders attacked the British colony of Upper Canada. No one knows for sure why John was in the Lake Ontario area, so far from his home in VT. There is speculation that John was looking to purchase land for farming and lumbering (his wife’s family was well known in New York state for their lumber business). The Canada–United States border conflict became known as the Patriot War. John participated in the Battle of the Windmill, was captured and sentenced to life in prison in Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) in 1840. John would spend approximately 10 years on the island. The prisoners eventually receive pardons, but had to find their own transportation home. Eventually, John found passage on a whaler ship which took three years to get to a port in MA (about 1852). During the time that John was gone, his wife died and his children had grown, married and started families of their own. He did not know their location other than one daughter who had married might be in Rutland, VT and a son who might be living in Chicago, IL. At this point he became a wanderer and pauper roaming the states of VT and NY looking for his family, sleeping in Poor Houses occasionally, and telling his story of imprisonment and searching for family to anyone who would listen. He apparently was popular with newspapers as there are many accounts of his story telling and receiving food, shelter and money to help him continue his search. He never told a consistent story and eventually many thought that he was an imposter. He died in a Poor House in Burlington, VT in 1873." Again, I am not the DNA match.
