It is too long for me to type here.It is referred to the "myth" which is found in the Draper manuscript 17-S and was published as THE WASHBURN GIRL from the History of Brown Co. OH as told by Sara Washburn Shannon and D.M. Kelsey in "The History of the Wild West". The following note appears in the Washburn Book. " Note that is was not only the Washburns of KY who warred with the Indians of OH, but that the Washburns of WV could explain this incident."For example, this girl's father might have been James Washburn. A longer version of the story appeared under his name. So, apparently it is a well known story passed around among the Washburns of KY and OH. I don't have any military information to share for Cornelius. Here are 9 pgs of info that I have collected. Please verify the info. I have included my sources. The rest of the information on the Washburns before Jeremiah can be found in my file on Rootsweb, under the database name of bdoney. "Note: I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me in finding the names of Jeremiah Washburn's parents. I have chosen to use the date of about 1726 for the date of birth of Jeremiah Washburn. This date comes from Lyman Draper's interview with Phebe Grant (see William Grant and Phebe Washburn)--Phebe (Washburn) Grant, states the following "Jeremiah Washburn father of Cornelius died in the fall of 1806 aged about 80...". This would make Jeremiah's birth about 1726, but could be later, as Phebe Grant does not state that Jeremiah was actually 80 years old at his death, but about 80. Don Barnett, a Washburn researcher, found that a Lemuel Washburn was living in Sussex Co. NJ in the neighborhood of the McCoys, Devores and others. While Lemuel is a possibility as Jeremiah's father, Don Barnett has formulated a theory that this Lemuel is Lemuel Washburn, born Aug. 18, 1714 the son of Jonathan Washburn and Rebecca Perry of Bridgewater, MA and that Susanna Washburn, daughter of Jonathan Washburn and Rebecca Perry is the mother of our Jeremiah Washburn making Lemuel Washburn Jeremiah's uncle. Don bases this theory on the fact that Susanna Washburn had an illegitmate child ca. 1735/36 in Bridgewater, MA. Don believes that this child was Jeremiah and Susanna came to Sussex Co. NJ with her brother, Lemuel, and son, Jeremiah, and married George McCoy, who is mentioned in Jeremiah's will as his step-father. However, while we do have a little evidence that the Lemuel Washburn in Sussex Co NJ might be the s/o Jonathan Washburn, we have no actual proof that he was. While Don Barnett has put together circumstancial evidence, such as Ebenezer Washburn, brother of Jonathan living in Mon. Co. NJ which is near Sussex Co. NJ, to support his theory, he has not been able to find proof to verify it and therefore, I have chosen to leave Lemuel as the possible parent of Jeremiah, though there is no proof of this either. If Jeremiah's date of birth is close to 1726, then it is not possible for him to be a child of either Lemuel or Susanna, children of Jonathan Washburn as they would have been too young. If the Lemuel Washburn in Sussex Co. NJ is not the son of Jonathan Washburn, his parentage and date of birth unknown, he may likely be the father of Jeremiah. My Washburn genealogy does include Nathaniel Washburn born ca. 1740 who some researchers believe to be a brother to Jeremiah Washburn. There was also a John Washburn in Sussex Co. NJ at the time Jeremiah lived there and it is not known who he was. Recently, we have recieved information that Israel B. Washburn, s/o Moses L., s/o Isaac s/o George, s/o Jeremiah Washburn had as an ancestor a Col. Emanuel Washburn who served under Braddock in the French and Indian War. Could this have been Lemuel or was there a Emanuel who could be another possibility for the father of Jeremiah Washburn?? We do not have any information on him. Another possibility for the parents of Jeremiah Washburn could be Jonathan Washburn and his second wife Rebecca Johnson. I have no information about their possible children, except that the Rebecca Washburn who married Timothy Carver may have been their daughter instead of Ebenezer Washburn's. If anyone has any information about the children of Jonathan Washburn and Rebecca Johnson, please contact me. There is also the possiblitity that Jeremiah does not belong to the John Washburn line at all, but belongs to the William Washburn line. Phebe Grant also states that "Jeremiah Washburn was a native of England and came to Jersey when he was seven years of age---..." This could be taken to mean that Jeremiah Washburn was born in England. However, most researchers seem to dismiss this idea and I think Phebe Grant may have meant that Jeremiah had an English ancestry. Because Jeremiah's parentage has not been proven, it also not been proven that he belongs to the Jonathan Washburn line (we do not have proof that the Lemuel Washburn in Sussex Co. NJ was the s/o Jonathan Washburn). Therefore, I have devided my sources for Washburn information into two parts. One part under John Washburn (b. 1566) which includes Lemuel and Susanna Washburn, children of Jonathan. Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON WASHBURN: The Family of William Grant (born 1790 KY-died 1879 IN) and allied Washburn, Robbins and other families. Entries: 12934Updated: Mon Aug 11 12:43:06 2003Contact: Lou Ann Winterrowd George Washburn was in the Revolutionary War as a defender of Bryan's Station and he was in Crawford's campaign. He is buried in Round Hill Cemetery, Montgomery Co. IN. I have seen researchers on the internet giving George Washburn the middle initial W. and they have it standing for Washington. George Washburn was born in 1757, so if the researchers think that he was named after George Washington, it would have to have been because of some personal relationship with George Washington which I know nothing about as Washington was not president until after the Revolutionary War and was probably not well known before that. In her interview with Mr. Lyman Draper in 1863, Phebe Grant states, "George Washburn was to say he was ten years older than his brother Nicholas and eight years older than Cornelius. George Washburn died in March 1851, nearly 94 years old on Coal Creek (Fountain County) Indiana some 25 or 30 miles below Lafayette--hence was born in 1757, Cornelius in 1765 and Nicholas in 1767. (George Washburn's tombstone has his death date as Mar. 9, 1850--I am not sure which date is correct) Now many researchers have taken the story that Jemima Hankins tells Mr. Draper about the family going west in 1774 and that has Cornelius being born then as showing when Cornelius was born. I think that Mr. Draper was confused by what Jemima told him and wrote these facts down incorrectly. As far as I know this is the only place in the Draper MS that has Cornelius Washburn born in 1774. Later in the MS, Jemima says that Cornelius was 68 years old when he went west to the Yellowstone Country in 1832. This would make his date of birth 1764. What Jemima Hankins actually said to Mr. Draper and why he wrote that information down incorrectly, we will never know, but that statement has mislead many researchers over the years. Hopefully, the following will help correct this mistake. After more study of the Draper MS and other sources, I believe that the 1765 date of birth is correct for Cornelius Washburn, though no one seems to know exactly when he was born and different dates are given by different people. I am basing my belief that Cornelius Washburn was born in 1765 on the above statement of Phebe (Washburn) Grant, dau. of George Washburn plus the following: We have documented proof of the date of birth of Nicholas Washburn--April 19, 1767 1. Tombstone of Nicholas Washburn, Washburn Cemetery Cain Twp. Fountain Co. IN--died Nov. 5, 1851, 84y 6m 18d 2. 1850 Census Cain Twp. Fontain Co. IN--Nicholas Washburn age 83, male, gunsmith, born NJ 3. In the will of Jeremiah Washburn, he states George is his eldest son, Joseph, his second son, Cornelius his third son and Nicholas, his fourth son. If Nicholas was his fourth son and born after Cornelius, his third son, and Nicholas was born in 1767, Cornelius would have to have born before Nicholas and therefore Cornelius could not have been born in 1774. 4. Also from the Draper MS--MS3BB page 52 "State of Indiana, Rush County" On this 23d day of November, A.D. 1850, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace, within and for the County & State aforesaid, Nicholas Washburn aged eighty three years, a resident of Fountain County & State of Indiana, who being duly sworn according to law, declared that he is the identical Nicholas Washburn who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Simon Kenton in the Indian war of 1786" 5. Draper MS 3BB page 53--from letter dated Feb. 27, 1747 from David G. Devore, "I think however that Nicholas his brother can do more than any one else--He is about eighty years old, but is a man of strong mind & I consider fully able to give a clear & sensible account of the doings (?) of his brother. 6. Draper MS 3BB page 39--I do not know who the writer of this letter is but he states, " In May 1843 he (referring to Nicholas Washburn) was residing in Walker, Rush County Ind-aged 76 yrars,..." 7. Phebe Parker Laycock, second wife of Nicholas Washburn was born in 1766, so this closely matches 1767 for birth of Nicholas. 8. If Cornelius was born in 1774, he would have only been 17 years old when he married for the first time July 1, 1791 which is not impossible, but unlikely. 9. Considering that Nicholas was born in 1767 and Cornelius was 2 years older than Nicholas, his date of birth should have been 1765 and if George was 8 years older than Cornelius and 10 years older than Nicholas, his date of birth should have been 1757.
