From: bamyman at wrldnet.net (Tom Thompson) Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 09:37:32 -0500 Subject: Lake in Walton Co. Georgia Looking for info on the following Lake family in Walton Co. Ga: Mary Lake born ca 1796 in S.Carolina married John Thompson died? The only candidate for her father is Elisha Lake born ca 1770. She seems to have had one brother Daniel Lake born ca 1800. He died around 1830 and John Thompson was appointed administrator of the estate in 1831. Daniel's wife was probably Martha. She is found on the 1850 census of Walton age 48 with a daughter Easter age 19 living a few houses from Mary Lake Thompson. Elisha Lake age 22 is living next door to Martha with wife Mary age 18. This is probably Daniel's son too. Elisha was in the 42nd Georgia Volunteer Infantry and was captured at the Battle of Nashville in December 1864. He later died of smallpox in Camp Chase Prison in Ohio. This is about what I have on this Lake family. Thanks. Georgia Tom, Michael Lake (hiflyer at phenixcable.net) on this list is also invloved in researching LAKE in Ga. I have very little LAKE related info in my files for SC, Ga, and Oh. Have you checked the book "The Lake Family in America" by Devereux LAKE? It contains LAKE info from all over the country. There is one chapter on a branch that went to Georgia. Unfortunately the book is not indexed. I did a cursory review looking for info pertinent to what you are looking for. I found a Thomas LAKE who went to Newberry Co in SC after the Revolutionary War. One of his sons was Elijah who married Jane. There's no mention of a Mary or Daniel. From: llwhite at uncg.edu (Laurie L. I can tell you much about them. Thomas's children were: Enoch, John, David, Elijah, and Joseph. Joseph is my ggggrandfather. I have Elijah dying in 1855 and having married Jane. Many of the family moved to Edgefield, SC. I would love to know anything about Thomas. I know he was first in Fauquier Cty., Va. And before that I believe the family was in Maryland. Thomas married Elizabeth Reeder. --Laurie Lake White (LLWhite at uncg.edu) From: mlake at melake.erols.com (Marshall Lake) Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 21:48:51 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [lake-surname] Lake in Walton Co. Georgia Laurie, Have you seen Devereux LAKE's book? The text reads: " The origin of the Lake families in America was in the state of New Jersey, Hunterdon County, where the two families of Lake and Reeder lived during the sixteenth century. W. Lesser was a citizen of Hanover, Germany, about the period of 1500-25, whose descendants settled in New Jersey. The name was changed in English to Reeder. Joseph Reeder came over from England and settled in New Jersey and from a small record book in his possession he was probably decsended from the House of Hanover. Thomas Lake of New Jersey married a daughter of Joseph Reeder and Susanna Gano Reeder, Elizabeth Reeder. Some Lakes and Reeders moved to Virginia, and there became the ancestors of many distinguished men of that State. Thomas Lake was a patriot in the Revolutionary War, serving in the Second Regiment of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, in company of Daniel Bray. After the war he came to Virginia, lived a few years and then moved to South Carolina, settling in Newberry County." The text goes on to name Thomas' children and to describe their families. If there is other info in the book on this Thomas it's difficult to say since the book is not indexed. Does anyone know if an indexed version of Devereux LAKE's book exists?
