https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/details/LZLC-BM9 Y-DNA test results say Thomas LAKE descends from John LAKE of Gravesend, Kings Co, NY (c1620 England - c1685 Gravesend, married Ann SPICER). See https://www.familytreedna.com/public/lake?iframe=ydna-results-overview A Thomas LAKE descendant is kit #124876. Some descendants of John LAKE went to south NJ. Some descendants of John LAKE went west into NJ (mostly Middlesex Co, Somerset Co and Hunterdon Co). Some of the descendants who went to Somerset Co were Loyalists. These LAKEs went to Albany Co, NY, and later to Canada. The birthyear of 1735 for Thomas LAKE comes from the George Leland Summer book referenced in Sources. Findagrave also says 1735. Summer's book can be downloaded here: https://dn720509.ca.archive.org/0/items/newberrycountyso00summ/newberrycountyso00summ.pdf Devereux Lake says "The origin of the Lake families in America was in the state of New Jersey, Hunterdon County, where the two families of Lake and Reeder lived during the sixteenth century." I doubt there were anyone but Native Americans in Hunterdon County in the 1500's. :) But, I assume that's where the birthplace of Thomas LAKE (Hunterdon Co, NJ) comes from. Findagrave says Somerset Co, NJ. Devereux Lake says "Thomas Lake was a patriot in the Revolutionary War, serving in the Second Regiment of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, in company of Daniel Bray. After the war he came to Virginia, lived a few years and then moved to South Carolina, settling in Newberry County." There was indeed a Thomas LAKE who served in the Second Regiment of Hunterdon Co, NJ, in company of Daniel Bray. But that Thomas LAKE was 21 years old in 1780. Thomas LAKE of Cameron Parish purchased 100 acres in Loudoun Co from Daniel REEDER 14 Oct 1782. On 11 Oct 1784 Thomas LAKE and Elizabeth, his wife, sold 100 acres plus 631 acres granted to Thomas LAKE 26 Jun 1770 (all land in Loudoun Co) to Nathaniel PEGG. There's a grant for Joseph REEDER here ... https://lva.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/fulldisplay?docid=alma990008600290205756&context=L&vid=01LVA_INST:01LVA&lang=en&search_scope=MyInstitution_noAER&adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine but I can't find anything for Thomas LAKE. Joseph REEDER Jr is likely a brother of Elizabeth REEDER. An abstract of Loudoun Co tithables shows Thomas LAKE in Loudoun Co 1767-1781, and Joseph REEDER 1765-1781. Loudoun Co Personal Property Tax Lists show Thomas LAKE there 1782-1784, and Joseph REEDER 1782-1783. Thomas LAKE & Elizabeth REEDER moved to SC after he sold his land in Loudoun Co Oct 1784 and before he witnessed the will of Richard Bonds near Beaver Dam Creek on 24 Sep 1786. If Thomas LAKE (d 1814 SC) served during the Rev War, it would have been while he was residing in Virginia. He did not serve in NJ since he moved to VA before the war began. I have not looked for VA Rev War records but there are indications Thomas LAKE served with the Loudoun County Militia, Second Battalion. I've done a fairly comprehensive one-name study (LAKE) in Hunterdon Co, NJ but certainly not exhaustive. There are one set of brothers named Thomas (born c1735) and Timothy, children of William LAKE (c1700 Richmond Co, NY - 1775 Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ). However, the brothers are both in the Kingwood Twp ratables for 1778. William LAKE had his land resurveyed in 1760 at 379 acres. William names his 5 sons and his one daughter's married name in his will. All six children are in the 1778 Kingwood Twp ratables and their total acreage owned is 379. That is the only Timothy LAKE in Hunterdon Co (in fact, in all of NJ) with the correct possible timing to be Timothy in Virginia. There are 3 Thomas LAKEs (including the son of William above) with the correct possible timing to have married Elizabeth REEDER c1761 and be in Virginia by 1767. All 3 are accounted for and all 3 stayed in NJ. Again, my research certainly isn't exhaustive. Since Y-DNA shows Thomas LAKE descending from the Gravesend LAKEs, he wouldn't have come from the Maryland LAKEs or the New England LAKEs. I'm all ears if anyone has any ideas. Edit: The Thomas and Timothy, sons of William, make the most sense to be the people in Loudoun County. And Kingwood Township is close to Hopewell Township where the REEDERs are supposed to have lived. Additionally, there's evidence the William LAKE family and the REEDER family were acquainted (by doing estate inventories together, etc). It's possible that Thomas & Timothy were in the ratables in Kingwood Twp and the tithables in Loudoun Co at the same time. If an indenture can be found where Thomas LAKE (of Virginia or SC) conveys land in Kingwood Twp, that might seal the deal.
