We are a small group of descendants of Boardwine Robbins/Robins (B. 1778 Maryland, D. 1861 Indiana), through his son Alford Robbins (B. 1807 Ohio, D. 1853 Indiana) (sometimes listed as “Alfred”) and his grandsons Samuel Robbins (B. 1846 Indiana, D. 1928 Indiana) and Lewis Robbins (B. 1833 Ohio, D. 1908 Indiana). We are interested in solving some mysteries in our earliest known family history on the Robins/Robbins side of our family. A couple of us have worked on tracing Boardwine’s last name back. Here is what we believe we know: we believe Boardwine’s father was Josiah Robins (called “Josias” in a will) (B. 1735, D. 1785 in Worcester County, MD). From there, we believe Josiah’s Robins line goes back: Josiah, son of * Joseph Robins (B. before 1725, Accomack County, VA, D. 1747 in Accomack County, VA) son of * William Robins (B. 1679 in Somerset County, MD, D. 1725 in Accomack County, VA) son of * John Robins, cordwainer, first documented in Nansemond Co VA 1660s; married Katherine, widow of Hugh Mannix/Mannocks in Nansemond by 1678; migrated to Somerset Co MD in 1678, transporting himself and Katherine, plus Katherine's children Hugh, John, Margaret, Katherine, and Elizabeth, plus John and Katherine's children, Mary and Sarah. John patented “Late Discovery” on 22 Nov 1679 on the Pocomoke River in Somerset County, MD, and sold it all by 1687 when they bought land in Accomack Co, VA, which stayed in the Robins family for three more generations. John and Katherine are our earliest known Robins ancestors. We are interested in (well known) information on Obedience Robins and his son Capt./Major John Robins, who both lived nearby in Virginia. We have assumed there must be some family connection to our John Robins (either in VA or in England?), but so far, we have not found documents specifically tying our John to the Obedience Robins family. Here are our current research questions: 1. Has anyone researched John Robins, cordwainer and owner of “Late Discovery” in Somerset County, MD in 1679, wife Katherine/Catherine, both of whom lived previously in Nansemond County, VA? Do you know of documents showing his possible parents, family ties to other branches of the Robins family, or immigration records? We know of a couple of court cases, but are interested in learning about his family. 2. Does anyone know about Josiah Robins (b. 1735 (Accomack, VA), d. 1785 Worcester MD), son of Joseph--He had a brother Levi, who figures in his life, and a son, Josiah Jr, born about 1770, to an unknown wife. Josiah Sr's second marriage by 1774 was to Mary Brittingham, d/o Solomon Brittingham, and they had two children--Boardwine, born 22 Aug 1778, and Arralanta, born in 1780. These three siblings Josiah Jr, Boardwine, and Arralanta (who married Jos. Nicholson) migrated to Ohio around 1798-1800. We have found almost no documentation on our direct ancestor, Boardwine. 3. Does anyone know if we can use DNA of “Robins/Robbins” named relatives to confirm (or rule out) ties to specific Robins ancestors? All of us have done DNA testing - please feel free to check our usernames (below), to see if we are a match. We’re also interested in possible Y-DNA information for Robins/Robbins-named descendants that could go further back than Ancestry matching. Thanks Robbins Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.robbins/3292 Thu, 05 Jan 2017 16:41:30 GMT I am seeking information on the family of Sarah and Rebecca Robbins. Sarah married Elkanah Smiley, Rebecca married John Robbins. Sarah born 1828, Rebecca 1835. I believe, based on census records and family in the area, that they are related to William, Henry, Abraham, John, and James Robbins. I find many of these individuals in census records 1850-1860s living together or in close proximity to each other. It appears that parents died before 1850. Would like to know if anyone has information on this family. I am seeking information on the family of Sarah and Rebecca Robbins. Sarah married Elkanah Smiley, Rebecca married John Robbins. ShirleyB24 (ShirleyB24) Robbins family of MA and The Robbins of VA https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.robbins/3522 Thu, 15 Dec 2016 21:57:47 GMT The Robbins family of MA came from Hedingworth, Leicester, England c-1630. The Robbins family of VA came from Long Buckby, Northhampton, England c-1620. These two towns are about 14 miles apart. Yet the DNA project shows the families as separate. Also the DNA shows both families as primarily Viking. How far back can DNA go, to show a common ancestor for these two Robbins families? Or does the DNA project show there is a likely common ancestor already? The Robbins family of MA came from Hedingworth, Leicester, England c-1630. The Gunn clan. We would of been distance cousins and would make sense to me why they would of stayed together after they came over here from Scotland. As for the Creek Indian, my Grandfather Jay Robbins swore we had Creek Indian in us. My more immediate family came over from the Appalachia's. I was actually doing some research online when I cam across this decades old post. I do know in regards to Wilson/Robbins we are from the same clan in Scotland. The Gunn clan. I noticed she mentioned memories of while living in Riviera, TX she had neighbors named Ruel and Emma Robbins with their 3 children named Eunice, Zola Fay and a boy nicknamed "Son". Her memory is as follows: "The neighbors lived about 1/4 mile south of her house and "Son" had a horrible tragedy that upset the entire area. Everybody used Kerosene (Coal oil) to cook with and one evening the parents (Robbins), were at the barn milking, Son (about 7 yrs old) struck a match to light the stove and threw the match down, but it had not gone completely out and landed in an open bucket of kerosene. It exploded and set him (Son) and the kitchen on fire. He was rushed to the hospital but died that night from burns to his body and fire he had swallowed. A time in my life (my Mothers) I will never forget. Everybody loved Son, he was a nice boy. I (my Mother) lost track of the family in 1939 but still think of them often and would love to know how and where they are." So....I am trying to locate, if possible, this family or family of this family for my Mother. She believes that Eunice and Zola Faye married brothers named Garner...first names unknown. Thank you for any leads. My Mothers name is Lanora Dean Starling and her parents name were Omer Dewey Starling and Grace Leona (Sallie) Wooley-Starling.
