We are a small group of descendants of Boardwine Robbins/Robins (B. 1778 Maryland, D. 1861 Indiana), through his son Alford Robbins (B. 1807 Ohio, D. 1853 Indiana) (sometimes listed as “Alfred”) and his grandsons Samuel Robbins (B. 1846 Indiana, D. 1928 Indiana) and Lewis Robbins (B. 1833 Ohio, D. 1908 Indiana). We are interested in solving some mysteries in our earliest known family history on the Robins/Robbins side of our family. A couple of us have worked on tracing Boardwine’s last name back. Here is what we believe we know: we believe Boardwine’s father was Josiah Robins (called “Josias” in a will) (B. 1735, D. 1785 in Worcester County, MD). From there, we believe Josiah’s Robins line goes back: Josiah, son of * Joseph Robins (B. before 1725, Accomack County, VA, D. 1747 in Accomack County, VA) son of * William Robins (B. 1679 in Somerset County, MD, D. 1725 in Accomack County, VA) son of * John Robins, cordwainer, first documented in Nansemond Co VA 1660s; married Katherine, widow of Hugh Mannix/Mannocks in Nansemond by 1678; migrated to Somerset Co MD in 1678, transporting himself and Katherine, plus Katherine's children Hugh, John, Margaret, Katherine, and Elizabeth, plus John and Katherine's children, Mary and Sarah. John patented “Late Discovery” on 22 Nov 1679 on the Pocomoke River in Somerset County, MD, and sold it all by 1687 when they bought land in Accomack Co, VA, which stayed in the Robins family for three more generations. John and Katherine are our earliest known Robins ancestors. We are interested in (well known) information on Obedience Robins and his son Capt./Major John Robins, who both lived nearby in Virginia. We have assumed there must be some family connection to our John Robins (either in VA or in England?), but so far, we have not found documents specifically tying our John to the Obedience Robins family. Here are our current research questions: 1. Has anyone researched John Robins, cordwainer and owner of “Late Discovery” in Somerset County, MD in 1679, wife Katherine/Catherine, both of whom lived previously in Nansemond County, VA? Do you know of documents showing his possible parents, family ties to other branches of the Robins family, or immigration records? We know of a couple of court cases, but are interested in learning about his family. 2. Does anyone know about Josiah Robins (b. 1735 (Accomack, VA), d. 1785 Worcester MD), son of Joseph--He had a brother Levi, who figures in his life, and a son, Josiah Jr, born about 1770, to an unknown wife. Josiah Sr's second marriage by 1774 was to Mary Brittingham, d/o Solomon Brittingham, and they had two children--Boardwine, born 22 Aug 1778, and Arralanta, born in 1780. These three siblings Josiah Jr, Boardwine, and Arralanta (who married Jos. Nicholson) migrated to Ohio around 1798-1800. We have found almost no documentation on our direct ancestor, Boardwine. 3. Does anyone know if we can use DNA of “Robins/Robbins” named relatives to confirm (or rule out) ties to specific Robins ancestors? All of us have done DNA testing - please feel free to check our usernames (below), to see if we are a match. We’re also interested in possible Y-DNA information for Robins/Robbins-named descendants that could go further back than Ancestry matching. Last: If anyone has interest in discussing on Facebook, we’ve set up this group for descendants of Boardwine Robbins/Robins: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Robins.Robbins.MD.VA.Genealo... Alison Robins was a self-taught spy whose job was intercepting messages transmitted to the German U-boats that surrounded Britain during World War II, and passing them on to the expert codebreakers at the Bletchley Park cryptanalysis headquarters. Robins, one of the last surviving members of the group who came to be known as the UK’s secret listeners, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, following a lengthy battle with dementia, according to several news sources. She was 97. Early in the war, Robins joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service and worked at the Royal Navy College. During her down time, she sat in on Morse code classes and learned the system. This initiative was rewarded with assignment to a series of isolated coastal listening stations. Robins continued to develop her skills, teaching herself the German language as she spent long hours monitoring German fleet chatter during the Battle of the Atlantic. “She used to say, ‘Anyone who thinks black coffee keeps you awake is wrong. The only thing that keeps you awake is the thought that, if you fall asleep, people will die,’” her daughter Jill Hazell told the British media. During World War II, the UK was reliant on Allied convoys to supply the nation with food and war material. German submarines were an existential threat, and top priority was given to breaking the codes of the German Navy. The codebreakers working at Bletchley Park have become legendary, not only for their wartime efforts, but also for breakthroughs in computer science that had broader application after the war. In recent years, their exploits have become better known in popular culture thanks to movies like “The Imitation Game.” (1920 – 2017), secret WWII code listener When Nazis schemed, she was listening. When I did not find Bertie with any of the rest of the family I assumed she had died before the 1930 Census. After finding that she was still alive in VA in 2006, I searched further for her. I found what may be her living in Hopewell VA in the 1930 and 1940 Censuses as an adopted daughter, Bertie CARTER with Frederick Arthur and May Bertie ROBINS. Levi shows in most censuses as being born in NC. From checking censuses, it appears Levi may have been married up to 3 times - #1 unknown ca 1830; #2 - Eliza ca 1840; and #3 - Sarah Spencer ca 1857 - all in Monroe Co., Ohio I believe. Wives #1 & 2 may actually be the same woman but the age doesn't quite match up from the 1840 to 1850 census...we all know plenty of mistakes were made on the earlier censuses due to people not knowing their true DOB so they're doing a "ballpark" guess on the year they were born. Levi's YOB changed from census to census - 1806, 1808, 1810, etc. Levi lived in Monroe Co., Ohio from 1840 until his death, which had to be after 1880 as he's in that census - can find no death record. He's in the 1840 Monroe Co., Ohio census, and may be the one I found in Belmont Co., Ohio in 1830. I believe Levi's children are: Stephen b. ca 1832, lived in Monroe Co., Ohio; William b.ca 1835; Swasey b. 1838 - can't find him after 1860 census; Levi b. ca 1841; Wesley b. ca 1850; John W. b. ca 1851; Danford b. ca 1858; Martha "Mattie" Ann b. June 1861; Russell b. ca 1866; Albert b. ca 1868; & Edward b. ca 1871 - all born in Monroe Co., Ohio. There are tons of Robbins/Robins in North Carolina so I'm totally lost there. My search started with Martha Ann Robbins/Robins (spelling differed depending on census). Martha Ann married Charles Emery Crandall ca 1880 in either Monroe Co. or Noble Co., Ohio. They had 6 children. I have some more info on these children of Levi's. His 1st son, Stephen, married Ellen Barnett ca 1855 and they ultimately moved to Jackson Co., West Virginia. I just want to be sure I have correct information and I'd also like to find out who Levi (Sr.)'s parents and siblings are if possible. I did a search on Ancestry.com for any men named Swasey/Swazy and only 2 different ones came up - Swasey Robbins for 1850 which is correct as he was living w/his parents, and a Swazy Wise, who is in the 1870 Monroe Co., Ohio census, and both of them are b. ca 1838, which makes me wonder if he changed his last name to Wise if he married Rebecca Wise - her mother lived just "down the way" and her property value was $8500 in 1870 - pretty good for that time period. Although Elizabeth Wise had 2 sons, but maybe - and this is a BIG maybe - she wanted Swasey Robbins to change his last name to Wise in order for he and/or his children to inherit...unusual but not unheard of. Any suggestions, comments, and/or help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Mary was born c1764 and died 13 Feb 1817 in Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ. She is possibly a child of Charles and Sarah HUFF (possibility presented by the naming patterns of Mary's children). There is a Charles HUFF/HOFF who appears in Hunterdon Co with the right timing to be Mary's father. Jonathan ROBINS died intestate in Jan/Feb 1815 in Hunterdon Co. There is a controversy as to Jonathan's parents. They are either Jonathan ROBINS (1694-1774) and Dinah ------, or Isaac ROBINS (c1735-1783) and Susannah ------. Mary and presumably Jonathan (the headstone is broken) are buried in the Garrison-Tharp Cemetery in Bethlehem Twp, Hunterdon Co. The names of the children of Jonathan ROBINS and Mary HUFF/HOFF in birth order are: Charles (b 1788) Susannah Sarah Jonathan (b 1793) Mary Isaac Elizabeth Jonas (b 1801) William (b 1802) Joseph James Abigail (b 1809) Any help is much appreciated.
