LAKE, POLICE MATRON FOUND DEAD IN WEEHAWKEN" Heart Attack Fatal - Pet Dogs Attack Son During Excitement Mrs. Abbie M. Lake, 48, of 3410 Park Ave., Weehawken, township police matron since 1927, was found dead in her bed at 8:25 am Saturday by her daughter, Mrs. Marie Schimke. Dr. Alonso of North Hudson Hospital staff pronounced the woman dead of a heart attack at 8:40 am and said that she had been dead 6 hours. Mrs. Schimke, who lives with her mother, had returned home Saturday morning after spending the night at the home of her sister, Mrs. Rita McClary, 345 Potter Pl., Weehawken. Mrs. Lake, appointed police matron by the late republican Mayor Emil Grauert, was the sister of Weehawken Fire Captain Patrick Dwyer of Highwood Avenue firehouse, who lives at 40 Highwood Terrace, and the mother of Weehawken Patrolman Joseph Lake, honorably discharged World War 2 veteran. A lifelong resident of Weehawken, she was the widow of Joseph Leo Lake, veteran of the Spanish-American War, who died 18 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Union City, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Oulton-Kraft post 1923, VFW, of Weehawken. Surviving also are another son, Shipfitter 2/C George Francis, serving with the Navy 18 months, in the South Pacific; another brother, John J. Dwyer; 3 sisters, Mrs. Nellie Simmons, Mrs. Mary McElwreath and Mrs. John Shurr, and 1 grandchild. Funeral arrangements will be completed when Navy personal service reaches Shipfitter Lake in the South Pacific. William Schlemn Funeral Home, Union City, is in charge. During the excitement Saturday morning at the Lake home Patrolman Lake was bitten on the left thumb when he attempted to break up a fight between his mother's 2 pet dogs. He was treated at North Hudson Hospital by Dr. Alonso.
