Iola Register; Allen Co KS; 2008-1-9 Alice Lake Alice Elizabeth Dixon Lake, 94, of Le Roy died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Life Care Center in Burlington, which had been her home for four years and five months. She was born March 30, 1913, in Sunnyside community northwest of Le Roy, the daughter of Taylor L. and Ina Withered Dixon. She attended grade school in Sunnyside School No. 34 and Le Roy High School for two years until economics made it impossible for her to continue her education. When she was 11 her mother died leaving her to be mother to her younger sister, Evelyn, and housekeeper for her father and older brother, Joseph. She was married to her childhood sweetheart, Matthew Phillip Lake, Aug. 19, 1935, in Emporia. They were farmers moving in 1937 to a farm northwest of Le Roy. They would live there until his death Sept. 5, 2003. She enjoyed driving a tractor, tending chickens and gardening. She also enjoyed music and played the guitar as a young woman. She was a member of the Le Roy's United Methodist Church. She is survived by two of her three children, a son, Arthur M. and his wife, Barbara, Westphalia, and a daughter, Ina May Stapleton and her companion, Jack Day, Iola; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. A sister; Evelyn Yoho, a brother; Joseph, her youngest son, James F., and two infant grandsons, Mark and Heath Lake, died earlier. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Le Roy's United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Logue Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the VanArsdale Funeral Home in Le Roy.
