Lake, 78, of 756 Irvine St., Chippewa Falls, formerly of Eau Claire and New Auburn, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Maplewood Nursing Home in Bloomer after a courageous struggle with many health complications. She was born May 3, 1925, in Eau Claire to Ollie (Brathen) and John Fosberg. She graduated from high school in Eau Claire. Bernice married Gerald E. Lake on June 5, 1943, in Eau Claire, and they enjoyed 60 years of married life. After Gerald's retirement, they moved to their cabin on Long Lake, near New Auburn. They moved to the Chippewa Manor Retirement Community in April, 2003. Survivors include: her husband, Gerald of Bloomer; one son, Steven Lake of the Philippines; two daughters, Kathryn (Richard) Engel of Chippewa Falls, Peggy (William) Shearman of Lake Nebagamon; 10 grandchildren, Jon Lake, Trystann Tuschl, Stephanie Lake, Todd Engel, Shannon (April) Engel, Bryn (Dena) Engel, Jesse, Jason, Josiah, and Joshua Shearman; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a special friend, her "adopted daughter", June Engel of Chippewa Falls, and loving cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by: her parents; two brothers, Raymond and Art Fosberg; and one granddaughter, Lisa Woodford. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls, with the Rev. Fr. Robert Hoekstra, Chaplain of the Chippewa Manor Retirement Community officiating. Friends may call from 4 p.m. Tuesday and until the time of service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Bernice enjoyed her golf and bridge. She especially loved her very special moments while fishing with her son-in-law, Richard and loving family. The big one was always waiting for her. Robert Hoekstra, Chaplain of the Chippewa Manor Retirement Community officiated, with music provided by Judy Brist. Honorary casket bearers included grandsons, Todd Engel, Shannon Engel, Bryn Engel, Jon Lake, Jason Shearman, Jesse Shearman, Josiah Shearman, and Joshua Shearman.
