She was born on February 20, 1929, to Harold and Helen T. (Schwaegler) Kinney in Lancaster, Wis., She was a resident of Pengilly for 34 years. She moved from Iron River, Mich. and previously lived in Mo., and Platteville, Wis. She was a 1945 graduate of the Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Wis. She married Laurence Lake on June 4, 1948, in Platteville. Throughout her life, Bette was employed with the Lancaster Power and Light, a Legal Secretary for Kopp and McKeegan Law Firm, a seamstress for Jeanies Bridal Shop, and she worked for the Itasca Dry Goods in the fabric department. She was a member of the Nashwauk Lutheran Church, Alanon, East Side Neighbors, and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, and was a sponsor of the Jobs Daughters. Mrs. Lake had a great interest in art. She was a very talented and creative person. She entered art contests and did quite well in them. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, painting, traveling, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Helen T. (Schwaegler) Kinney; her daughter, Laureen Ann (Lake) Vernon; granddaughter, Ruby A Vernon; sister, Virginia Fuersterberg; and brother, Milton Kinney. She is survived by her husband Laurence 'Larry' A. Lake, Pengilly, Minn.; her son William A. (Nancy) Lake, Nashwauk, Minn., Larry A. (Nancy DeWar) Lake, Taconite, Minn.; daughter, Sharon L. (Timothy) Sweet, Florence, Ore.; brother, Harold 'Bud' (Joanne) Kinney, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Sister, Leila (Gordon) Essar, Elkhorn, Wis. ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. SERVICES:11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at the Nashwauk Lutheran Church in Nashwauk. The Rev. Jean Megorden will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing, and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Pallbearers are: Jeremy Lake, Larry Lake Jr., Kris Platt, Tod Thomas, Benjamen Graner, and Jesse, honorary pallbearers are: Daniel O. Krueger and Joseph E. Sweet.
