Iron River Reporter Feb 27 1974 Iron River MI Charles Lake, Phelps, former Iron River resident, perished in a fire that destroyed his home January 24, Mr. Lake was a disabled iron miner born in Finland December 25, 1890. Coroner Archie Storm reported the probable cause of death was from a faulty oil burner that may have exploded when he tried to light it. The fire was discovered when a man from the area was returning from work. The Phelps fire department was called, but when they arrived the entire home was in flames. Mr. Lake was preceded in death by his wife. It is believed that he has two sisters and a brother in Finland. Burial was in the Phelps cemetery with private services.
