Naples Daily News; Naples FL; 2005-6-21 Hinsdale, IL - Charles W. Lake Jr., 86, a 25 year resident of Hinsdale, IL, died June 7, 2005. He was born June 21, 1918 in LaPorte, IN. Before beginning school, Mr. Lake's family moved to Beloit where he attended Wright Grade School, Roosevelt Junior High School and Beloit Senior High School graduating in 1936. Mr. Lake attended the University of Wisconsin for one year and then received a scholarship to Cornell University in New York. He graduated from Cornell University in 1941 with a Bachelor's Degree AEME. Within weeks of graduation, he was is the Army serving at Governor's Island and Waterveliet in New York between 1941 and 1946. In 1946, he married Louise Sprague. They had two children, C. William Lake, an attorney and Elizabeth Lake, a homemaker. Mr. and Mrs. Lake have homes in Hinsdale, IL (a Chicago suburb) and Naples, FL. Mr. Lake joined R.R. Donnelley & Sons in 1946 in the Chicago Manufacturing Division. In 1947, he was named Assistant to the Treasurer, became Manager of Management Studies in 1948 and Director of Industrial Engineering in 1949. He was elected a Vice President in 1953. In 1956, Mr. Lake became Director of the Engineering Research and Development Division. He was named Director of the Operating Division in 1958, Director of the Chicago Manufacturing Division in 1959 and Director of General Sales in 1963. Mr. Lake was elected a Senior Vice President in 1963 and named to the Board of Directors in the same year. He was elected President in 1964, Chairman of the Board and President June 1, 1975 and Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer October 22, 1981. From July 1, 1983 to June 30, 1990, Mr. Lake was Chairman of the Executive Committee. Mr. Lake retired from Board of Directors on June 30, 1990. He was named Honorary Director July 1, 1990. In addition to the degree from Cornell University, Mr. Lake holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the Executive Program at the University of Chicago. Besides being the Honorary Director of the Board at R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company, Mr. Lake was a former member of the Board of Directors of AccuRay Corporation, American Hospital Supply Corporation, The Northern Trust Company, CBI, Inc., Inland Steel Industries and R. R. Donnelley. He was a Director and member of the Executive Committee, Executive Service Corps of Chicago, a Governing Member of the John G. Shedd Aquarium, an Honorary Life Trustee of the Museum of Science and Industry and Director of the John Crear Library Foundation. At the University of Chicago, he was on the Council on Graduate School of Business, the Citizen's Board and Visiting Committee to the Library. He was Trustee, Joint Council on Economic Education. At Cornell, he was Presidential Councillor, Trustee Emeritus, Member Development Advisory Committee, Member and Chairman Emeritus of the Engineering Council. At the University of Illinois, he was a Foundation Member and on the President's Council. He was a member of Northwestern University Associates, Tau Beta Pi and Beta Gamma Sigma, the First Congregational Church of LaGrange and an Honorary Trustee of the Chicago Sunday Evening Club. Mr. Lake received an award from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1983, Chicago Father of the Year in 1985 and Junior Achievement Chicago Business Hall of Fame in 1993. He is survived by his son, C. William (Susan) Lake III of LaGrange, IL; daughter, Elizabeth Lake; two grandchildren, Katherine (Cesar) Giron and Peter Lake; one great-grandson, Austin Giron; sister, Nancy (Roderick) Graeff of Ithaca, NY; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; and his brother, Alden (Audrey) Lake. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 25, 2005 at the First Congregational Church of LaGrange, 100 South Sixth Avenue.
