Sullivan County Democrat Callicoon, NY 13 Jam 2015 Claire Ernsberger, Ph.D SC Democrat Columnist, 80 Claire Ernsberger, of New York City and Ellenville, has died at age 80 under hospice care in Jersey City, New Jersey, on January 2, 2015. She was, of course, the About Books columnist for this newspaper for almost twenty years, alongside her professional activity as a psychoanalyst and psychoanalytic educator and write, which continued until shortly before her death. Born in the Bronx, she was a lifelong New Yorker, though she and her family also enjoyed Ellenville and their house there for more than 40 years. She is survived by her husband of more than 46 years, the Sullivan County Democrat's current About Books columnist, George Ernsberger, who succeeded his wife in that capacity, and by a daughter, Annie, and her husband Daniel Torres and the Ernsbergers' grandson James Lake, of Jersey City. After studies at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University), she took her bachelor's degree at Skidmore College. In 1979, The Union Graduate School awarded her the first doctorate ever granted in psychoanalysis as a separate discipline. She taught at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies in Manhattan (from which she also graduated) and lectured at other institues; she wrote for several professional journals.
