Star-Herald on August 23, 2002 Scottsbluff NE Doris Cronkrite Lake, 99, of Scottsbluff died Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at the Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff with Pastor Jeffery Grams of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery following the service. Visitiation will be today, Friday, August 23, 2002 from 3 until 7 p.m. at the Jolliffe Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to Prairie Haven Hospice. Doris was born on Feb. 5, 1903 in Ohio to Milligan and Laura Bell (Carnagan) Cronkrite. As a small child, she moved with her parents to Elizabethtown, Ill. She attended grade school at Tower Rock School in Elizabethtown. After completing the eighth grade she attended high school at Roseclaire, Ill. She traveled daily to school by boat on the Ohio River. After completing her formal education she was granted a Teacher's Certificate by Hardin County Superintendent of school Mrs. Hattie Rittenhouse. She taught school for several years before marrying Alton Thompson in 1927. A daughter Delores was born in 1929. She attended Beauty School in Grand Island and after completion of her training she moved to Scottsbluff and opened her own shop in 1937. She married Leo Lake in 1939. In 1954 she opened her own Beauty School. She was elected State President of the Nebraska Cosmetologists. She continued her career as a cosmetologist until 1963 when she sold the beauty school and was married to Herb Haun. They moved to Mead County where they owned and managed Rocky Mountain Kennels. She returned to Scottsbluff after her retirement and sale of the Kennel. She resided at 2208 Broadway, Scottsbluff. During her years of business in Scottsbluff, she was an avid supporter of the Junior College Cougar Football team. She hosted many dinners at her house and various locations with the football team as the honored guests. Survivors include many nieces and nephews, Bill and Gay Cronkrite of Minatare; Betty Richardson of Daytona Beach, Fla.; Bob and Carol Cronkrite of Elizabethtown, Ill.; Vernon and Janice Oxford of Elizabethtown, Ill.; Leonard and Winnie Daymon of Belleville, Mich.; Jack and Lois Stickley of Arizona; Dick and Donna Mau of Atlanta, Ga.; and Don and Fern Mau of Denver, Colo. She was preceded in death by her daughter, her husbands, three sisters, two brothers, parents and several nieces and nephews.
