Published in The Arizona Republic on 10/27/2007 Phoenix AZ Doris Lake, 86, passed away Thursday October 18th in Mesa, Arizona with her family by her side. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mrs. Lake move to California in 1942, and Alaska in 1948. She spent more than 50 years in Alaska, contributing countless hours to the Alaska Sled Dog and Racing Association (ASDRA) working as a timekeeper for the annual dog races. Some of Mrs. Lake's most memorable times were during the annual Fur Rendezvous Celebration when she hosted mushing families from throughout the United States. She was honored by ASDRA for her more that 50 years of service to them, and was crowned "Lady Trapper" for the 2006 Fur Rendezvous celebration; one of her most honored accomplishments. Those memories as Lady Trapper were some of her most cherished, and she was very proud to receive the honor. Mrs. Lake moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 2003 to improve her health and immediately loved her new home state, but Alaska did draw her back now and then for a visit to old friends and beauty of her old home state. Mrs. Lake was preceded in death by her husband Orville Lake. She is survived by her family: son, Orville Lake, Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska; daughters Tekla Taylor and her husband Charles of Houston, Texas; Tracey Lake and her husband Karl Stahlecker of Huntsville, Alabama; and her cherished grandchildren Jarek King, Zachary King and Tekla Stahlecker. A service was held on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 in Mesa where Mrs. Lake will be interred. She was loved by all who met her, and will be greatly missed.
