Bangor Daily News Bangor, Maine April 12, 2003 Saturday DOROTHY J. BUCKSPORT - Dorothy J. (Cleveland) Lake, 86, died unexpectedly April 10, 2003, in Bucksport. She was born Nov. 12, 1916, in Malden, Mass., the daughter of Bert L. and Geneva J. (Webb) Cleveland. Dorothy was the valedictorian of her graduating high school class in Malden, Mass. She graduated from Boston University with a degree in elementary education, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She attended business school and then she worked in an office at the Lahey Clinic. She married Irving F. Lake in 1942 and they moved to Millinocket, where he worked for the railroad. In 1954 she began teaching school in Bucksport, where she was influential to many young people in the community, retiring in 1979. She was a member of the Elm St. Congregational Church, where she was the organist for more than 50 years. She also served as Deaconess, taught Sunday school, was treasurer of the Ladies Guild, and was the well-loved choir director. Music was her passion and she would share her love with others by volunteering to play the organ and piano at the Penobscot Nursing Home and the Jed Prouty Assisted Living Center. Dorothy was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, where she served in various positions, a member of the Maine Retired Teachers Association, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a retired teachers sorority. She enjoyed travelling, gardening, and was a member of the Bucksport Garden Club, the October Club, and the Downeast Women's Investment Club. Dorothy was a loving and thoughtful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and the Bucksport Community. Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Cindy Vermette and husband, Rodger of Winthrop, Carolyn Maunz and husband, Don, of South Bristol; sister, Barbara Sumner and husband, Kenneth, of Dover, N.H.; six grandchildren, Gerald Coleman and wife, Laurie, of Blue Hill, Janet Perkins and husband, Thomas, of Dedham, Chris Coleman and wife, Donna, of Surry, Allen Vermette and fiance, Sheryl Day, of Belmont, N.H., Clark Vermette of South Berwick, Katie Vermette of Auburn; six great-grandchildren, Austin, Natalie, Megan, Devon, Emily, Max; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; many special friends including Arline Blanchard and Edwina Lindsey. She was predeceased by her husband in 1989; her father in 1977; and her mother in 1996. Visitation for family and friends will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. A gathering of conversation and refreshment will be 11:30-12:30 p.m. Sunday at Brown Hall. A service of remembrance will then follow at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Elm St. Congregational Church, Bucksport, with Rev. Daniel Berry and Rev. Joe Palmer officiating.
