Albany Democrat Herald Albany OR 97321 14 May 2006 Dorothy White Aug. 13, 1916--April 27, 2006 Dorothy Jane White passed away Thursday, April 27. She was 89. Born in Duluth, Minn., Dorothy was the only child of Glenn and Amy Cochran. Her early years were spent in Minnesota and North Dakota. The family moved west to San Pedro, Calif., in 1929. Dorothy studied piano in her teens, becoming very proficient and performing as an accompanist for performers in the Los Angeles area. Her piano career was interrupted during her senior year of high school by a severe case of tuberculosis. Soon after her recovery she met and married a young sailor, John E. Lake. Sons John and Martin were born in 1938 and 1941. After several years of port duty in San Diego, John was posted to the USS Arizona where he died Dec. 7, 1941. She was left to raise her boys alone. She married again and lived in various locations in Southern California and Florida. During that time she co-owned an apartment complex in Riverside and a resort on the west coast of Florida. Following her divorce in 1961 she moved back to California where she met and married Roy Dickinson. They moved to Newport in 1974 and several years later to Philomath. They were well known in Newport and the mid-Valley area for their performances of dance music at fraternal lodges, senior centers and Grange halls. They were active members of the Corvallis Mooose and Eagles lodges. Dorothy served on the Philomath Library Board. Roy passed away in 1993. In 1994, at the age of 78, she married 81-year-old Raymond White. She and Ray enjoyed many activities and friends associated with his model railroading hobby. Following her stroke, Ray and Dorothy moved to Timberhill Place where they spent their last years together. Ray preceded Dorothy in death in August 2005. Dorothy is survived by sons John Stephenson of Portland and Martin Stephenson of Corvallis, grandchildren Anne Hogan, Kathryn Stephenson and Jennifer Stephenson, and great-grandchild Mia Rose Hogan, all of Portland. Private memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 20, at Timberhill Place in Corvallis. Memorial contributions can be made in Dorothy's name to Benton Hospice Service, 2350 Professional Drive, Corvallis, OR 97330, or Mennonite Home, 5353 Columbus St. SE, Albany, OR 97322 Arrangements are by Twin Oaks Funeral Home. PS. It looks like that unnamed marriage, divorce, could be Stephenson--maybe he adopted her sons that are in top of obit as sons of Lake and in survivors as Stephenson. I couldn't put it in the Daily Obit Times but a thought!
