Los Angeles Times; Los Angeles CA; 2003-10-24 Lake, Dorothy Dales Born in Atwood, CA July 28, 1914 to William McKinley Dales and Edith Irene Flynn Dales. Dorothy passed peacefully the evening of October 20, 2003 at her home at the age of 89. A resident of Garden Grove, CA, since her early childhood. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Harry Louis Lake, native and first Mayor of the City of Graden (sic) Grove. Dorothy graduated from Garden Grove High School in 1932 as class Valedictorian and from UCLA in 1936 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. She began dating Lois (sic) while still in high school and they married following her college graduation in 1936. They immediately settled in Garden Grove where she became a devoted spouse and mother and active in community service. As part of her community service activities, Dorothy was a founding member and first President of the Garden Grove Lamp Lighters Guild for the Children's Hospital of Orange County. She served as Statewide Vice President of both the Garden Grove Junior Women's Club and the local chapter of the American Association of University Women: as Girl Scout Leader and member of the committee that established Camp Sherman Sumer Camp for the Orange County Girl Scout Council: as Chairperson of the West Orange County Water Board; and as an election day poll volunteer. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Garden Grove. For her community service, the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce recognized her as Woman of the Year. She is survived by her son Harry Louis Lake, Jr. and his wife Sadie Sue Pendleton Lake of Orange, CA; daughter Kathleen Lake Andres and her husband Roger Brian Andres of Indian Wells, CA; and son Charles Willliam Lake and his wife Julie Sorensen Lake of Santa Ana, CA. Her oldest child, Nancy Jean Lake, tragically succumbed to leukemia at the young age of 12. Also surviving her are her grandchildren Andrew, Pamela, James, Brian, Katherine, Christine, and Meghan; 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She is survived by her sister Barbara Jane Hackney of Long Beach, CA;widow of George Harrison Hackney; her borther Jack Howard Dales and his wife Carolyn Sue Schmidt Dales, of San Bernardino, CA and her sister-in-law Marjorie Rowcliff Dales, of San Diego, CA, widow of her brother. , William Dales. Preceding her in death were her sisters Edith Dales Whittington, Roxanna Dales, and Janice Dales. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 PM on October 24 at Fairhaven Memorial Park following viewing from 10:00 AM to to (sic) 1:00 PM, also at Fairhaven. In lieu of flowers, donations by be(sic) give (sic) to the Children's Hospital of Orange County.
