The Star Phoenix Saskatoon, SK. 07 Dec 1999 LAKE Dorothy Mabel Lake passed away on December 1, 1999 at Extendicare in Saskatoon. She is survived by a sister, Vivian Thorpe of Saskatoon; a brother, Lloyd (Roslyn) Mann of Ottawa; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was born to Howard and Jean Mann on August 27, 1916 in the Elmore district south of Carievale, SK. In 1920 she moved with the family to Melita, MB where she attended elementary and high school, studied piano, and played for services in Victoria United Church. She was pianist in the high school orchestra. In 1934, the family moved to Portage la Prairie, where she attained her A.T.C.M. (teacher and performer) and did further musical study in Winnipeg. In 1942, she married George Murray Lake, who was in the Armed Forces. In 1948, they moved to Birds Hill and in 1949 to North Kildonan, while Murray attended university. In 1953, Murray was ordained a minister in the United Church of Canada. Through the years they lived in Baldur, Brookdale and Melita, all in Manitoba and in New Norway, AB. In 1967, they moved to Brandon, MB. At each of these locations, Dorothy taught music, often played the church organ, and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Manitoba Music Teachers Association, being a charter member of the Portage la Prairie Branch. Dorothy was a member of the Trinity United Church in Brandon, and was made a life member of the United Church Women while in Melita. Dorothy's husband, Murray, died in June, 1989, of a brain tumour. Two years later, she moved to McClure Place in Saskatoon to be closer to family members. She lived in a number of care homes and finally at Extendicare. The family extends its thanks to Dr. Andres and the staff of Extendicare for the care that Dorothy received. Dorothy was the wife of the late Murray Lake. She resided in Baldur when Murray was the minister of the United Church." Murray Lake, B.A., B.D., and Dorothy Lake, A.T.C.M. Rev. Murray Lake was minister of Baldur and Glenora, from 1953 to 1958. Murray and Dorothy have no children. Murray belonged to the Chamber of Commerce and Royal Canadian Legion. Both Murray and Dorothy attended the square dance club. Murray was in the Canadian Army for four and a half years during WWII. Dorothy taught piano lessons, training children for the music festival, and was active in church organizations. She is now teaching music in Brandon. Murray is retired.
