Retired school teacher, South Ward, Superior. Graduate University of Nebraska. Survivors: son, Dr. Steven, Ogallala; brother, Herluf Christensen, Marquette; sister, Eva Johnston, Lincoln; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews. Superior Express; Superior NE; 23 Mar 2000 EDA LAKE Eda Nikoline Marie Christensen Lake, 93, was born on a farm north of Aurora, Neb., June 3, 1906. The oldest of four children of Peter and Andrea (Nielsen) Christensen. She died March 15 at the Ogallala Community Hospital, Ogallala, Neb. When she started to school, it was hard because she didn't know English. She attended District I until March when they moved to a farm near Hordville, she then attended District 18 until her father brought another farm and she went to District 100 from September until November when the boarded a train for New York City. It was a four day trip. They then boarded a ship for 11 days to Denmark for the winter. When they returned, they hit a storm and it took three weeks in the ship. Her father had bought a farm just before they left, so they moved to it and school was at District 51. She was in 7, 8,9 and 10 grades. She finished high school at Hampton High. She did housework in Aurora for a year and then attended York College to qualify for a first grade certification for teaching. She began teaching in September at District 27. Her second year was at District 100 Rural. She then went to Hordville for three years at the second grade level, then to Chapman for four years then to Nora for two years. On June 4, 1939, at the Kronberg Church she married Harley Lake. This union was blessed with on son, Steven. They lived in Superior where she helped him in his produce business and also had an Avon route. She taught Sunday School Classes, was a Boy Scout Den Mother, and a Girl Scout Leader. She joined Rebecca's in 1939. She went through all the Rebecca stations and was past noble grand in five years. Her husband died Oct 14, 1954, of Parkinson's disease and pneumonia. She was working at a drug store at the time, however it was not enough income so she took a job for the county superintendent of schools for two years. She earned enough hours to renew her teaching certificate and taught in Superior South Ward until she was 65 years old. During that time she attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in the summers and earned a bachelor of science degree in 1966. She joined Eastern Star in 1958 and went through all the chairs and was worthy matron in 1970. She retired in 1971, bought a house in Lincoln, where she lived for 25 years. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Lincoln. She had been a participant in Retired Teachers Organization and a member of Danish Sisterhood. She moved to Ogallala in May 1995 to an apartment to be near her son, Steve, and wife Bonnie. About two months ago she moved from her apartment to Wel-Life Assisted Living Center in Ogallala. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother, Viggo. She is survived by her son, Dr Steven and wife, Ogallala; a brother Herluf Christensen, Beatrice; a sister Mrs Bill Johnston (Eva), Lincoln, Neb., two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held on Saturday at the Evergreen Cemetery, Superior with the Rev Harold Backus officiating. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, was in charge of arrangements.
