Canon City Daily Record; Canon City CO; 2007-12-13 Fern E. Lake 93, died Dec. 11, 2007, at Hildebrand Care Center in Caņon City. She was born March 16, 1914, to Ed and Emma Heitschmidt in Osborne County, Kan. She married Alvis I. Lake Aug. 11, 1936, on the family farm in Osborne County, Kan. She and Alvis also owned and operated several motels. She taught at a one-room school house in Kansas and cooked at several nursing homes, hospitals and children's camps. She was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship, a 4-H Club leader and a rock hound. She is survived by one daughter, Donna (Claude) Barrett, of Pueblo West; three grandsons, Randy (Anita) Barrett, of Leesburg, Va., Jeff (Shireen) Barrett, of Gastonia, N.C., and Kerry (Carina) Barrett, of LeMars, Iowa; nine great-grandchildren, Chris Barrett, of Minneapolis, Minn., Brittany and Brady Barrett, of Leesburg, Va., Kirstin and Tyler Barrett, of Gastonia, N.C., and Hannah, Abby, Travis and Andrea Barrett, of LeMars, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Ernest Heitschmidt; one sister, Esther Wineland; and one granddaughter, Melony Barrett. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Caņon City, with Pastor Dave Grooters officiating. Inurnment will be in the Osborne County Cemetery in Osborne, Kan., at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Navigators, P.O. Box 6000, Colorado Springs, CO 80934.
