17 May 1900 Tonawanda Evening News North Tonawanda, NY The remains of Sergeant Frank L. Lake of Company C, 12th U. S. Infantry, who died at sea on the transport Sheridan while on his way home, arrived in Lockport Sunday night. Lake was a brave soldier. He participated in the great charge of the 13th regiment at San Juan and was wounded. He came home on a furlough, and when he recovered he promptly returned to his regiment at Fort Niagara. He accompanied the 13th to the Philippines, and earned a reputation for coolness and bravery in that distant land. His health broke down because of the climate, and he secured leave to return to America, which he was destined never to see again. The remains were conveyed to his home in the town of Newfane.
