Kuhl of Lake Shawnee passed away on April 12, 2014, at Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover, NJ. Born on October 28, 1935, to Frank P. Kuhl and Marie (Hopf) Kuhl, he grew up in the Bronx and earned degrees from Columbia and Yale Universities. He taught electrical engineering at Union College in Schenectady, NY, and at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, before settling in New Jersey with his family in 1973. Dr. Kuhl was an influential scientist whose work in pattern recognition for the US Army at Picatinny Arsenal has been cited by scholars more than 1500 times and applied worldwide in dozens of fields ranging from butterfly research to computer science to medicine. A uniquely individual man with an impish sense of humor, Frank enjoyed baseball, fishing, repairing Lionel trains, forest walks, butterflies, puns, and bargains. He is survived by his much-loved wife of 50 years, Maxine (Barrett) Kuhl; by his children Ellen and Robert Repetto of Salem, NH, Francie and Johan De Beer of Emerald, Queensland, Australia, Peter and Ruth Kuhl of Lake Shawnee, NJ, Peggy and Tom Edwards of Logan, NJ, and Raymond and Jenn Kuhl of Milford, MA; and by his grandchildren Jean-Pierre, Melissa, Sean, Billy, Rose, and a baby boy and girl due to arrive in June. An only child himself, Frank was extremely proud of his large family, who will all miss him dearly. A private interment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in New York, and a memorial service will be announced at a future date.
