Brattleboro Reformer; Brattleboro VT; December 2, 2000 GERTRUDE ANN BAUER BRATTLEBORO - Gertrude "Trudy" Ann Bauer, 92, died Wednesday, Nov 29, 2000, after years as a cancer patient, the last of those years spent with loving care at Eden Park in Brattleboro. She was born on June 22, 1998, in Huntington, Long Island, N.Y. When she was 8 years old, her mother, Valetta (Smith) Lake returned to Canada with two of Ms. Bauer's six siblings, leaving Ms Bauer and four siblings with their father, Arthur Lake. He plaed them in the children's home in Yaphank, Long Island, and later Ms Bauer became a foster child of the Rushmeyers. In 1937, she married Paul Bauer, a World War I veteran, who died May 26, 1942. She lived many years in an orderly, simply furnished, three-room apartment in Richmond Hill, N.Y.,supporting herself on a modest income from laboring as a bookkeeper. She is survived by her brother, George Lake, a niece and a nephew, seven grandnieces; and 11 great-grandnieces andnephews, who she loved to watch, particularly at play, as long as they didn't move "too much". Order and moderation were her guideposts. She enjoyed reading and simple poetry. She had a gentle and lively sense of humor. A memorial gathering will be held in the spring to include scattering Ms Bauer's ashes.
