The Chronicle Herald Friday, January 28, 2011 Volume 62 Number 23 Halifax NS Canada LAKE, Gladys Clare - 86, passed away peacefully in Northwood Centre, Halifax, after a long battle with Alzheimers, on Tuesday, January 25, 2011. Born January 24, 1925, in Aspy Bay, Cape Breton, Gladys was the third youngest of the 11 children of the late Donald and Catherine Cameron. Growing up in a large extended family, she developed a love for fiddle music and kitchen parties. She married Arthur Lake in Bay St. Lawrence in August 1948. They started their family in Dingwall, Cape Breton - eventually moving to Milford and then to the Halifax area in the mid 1950s where their youngest three children were born. Gladys was a homemaker, known for her tea biscuit baking and quilt-making skills and her wise and practical advice. She and Arthur raised their family of five in Dartmouth, but often travelled to Cape Breton with family and friends for visits. Gladys enjoyed Cape Breton dances, card playing (Auction 45s) and spending time with her close friends. She was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Dartmouth for many years. She is survived by daughters, Virginia and Clare, both of Halifax; sons, Paul (Janina), Cole Harbour; and Vernon (Debra), Windsor; daughter-in-law, Lyne Lake, Cole Harbour; grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael, Kerry, David, John, Sarah and Peter Lake; sisters, Jessie Sprague, Aspy Bay; and Pauline Mueller, British Columbia; brother, Archie Cameron, Fredericton, N.B.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur (1993); son, Barry (2006); sisters, Sybil Whiteway, Mary MacDonald, Elizabeth Gardiner, Mildred Skinner, Harriet MacIntyre, Florence Cameron, Margaret Cameron and brother, Ernest. Friends may call in the Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St. on Sunday, January 30, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Peter's Church, 10 Maple St., Dartmouth, on Monday, January 31 at 10 a.m., Father Jim Richards officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be in Mount Hermon Cemetery, Dartmouth at a later date. Gladys lived in Northwood Centre for the last three years of her life, and it was truly her home because of the cheerful, compassionate staff who enjoyed her and had a genuine concern for her well being. Thanks to the entire community of 1 Centre, Northwood (staff, residents and their family members) for your sympathy, kindness and prayers offered.
