From The Meeker HERALD (Meeker CO), 7 Nov 1985: Prominent Powell Park Rancher Dies Harold Dee Lake, well known Powell Park rancher since 1952, passed away Thursday, Oct. 30. Funeral services were conducted from the Zobel Chapel at two o'clock Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2, with Pastor Rayburn Cox officating. George Nay read the eulogy. Brenda Howard, organist, accompanied Bessie Allen and Patsy nay who sang "He Hideth My Soul" and "God Leads Us Along." Active pallbearers were Harold Anderson, George Rienau, Lonnie Shults, Terry Mobley, Thad Hauck, and George Nay. Honorary pallbearers were O. L. Williams, Steve Overton, Martin Villa, Bill Mannel, Gary Dunham, and Roy McKee. Interment was in Highland Cemetery with W. C. Zobel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Harold Dee Lake was born in Cyril, Okla. on June 29, 1910, to Ralph and Pearl Lake. He was the fourth of seven children. Dee spent his childhood in various communities in Oklahoma, moving to California at the age of 19, where he spent the next two years working on road construction. In 1931 he went to work for Shell Oil Company and also operated Lakes Turkey Farm in the Ojai Valley in California. Dee met his future wife, Marion Brown, in California where she was working as a registered nurse. They were married in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Dec. 31, 1941. To this couple were born four children: Bill, Bob, Teresa, and Barbara. In 1946, Dee came to the Powell Park Valley in Colorado on a hunting trip and to visit his wife's parents, Walter and Mary Brown. Falling in love with the area, he purchased the John Mannel farm in Powell Park. From 1947 to 1952 Dee both farmed in Colorado and operated the turkey farm in California. In 1952 he permanently moved his family to Colorado so he could spend more time fulfilling his dream of working with the land. In 1954 Dee and Marion purchased their first livestock--later raising registered Simmental of which Dee was a charter member of the American Simmental Association. During his years spent in Meeker he served for eight years on the Board of Education, was a member of the Grange organization and the Rio Blanco Livestock Association. For many years he faithfully attended the Meeker Bible Church where he gave much time to the overall development of the Church. Dee was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Pearl Lake, and one sister Beulah Stewart. He is survived by his wife Marion of the home, sons Bill of Meeker and Bob of Guymon, Okla.; two daughters Teresa Anderson and Barbara Sullivan, both of Meeker; four brothers, Gerald, Harry, Paul, and Hughes, and one sister Thelma, all of California, 11 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many friends and neighbors.
