Lake, Jr., 85, of 7 1/2 South 6th Street, Marshalltown, Iowa died Sunday, May 25, 2003 at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Following cremation at Pursel-Davis Crematory, memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 29 at the First United Church of Christ. No viewing or visitation is scheduled, however friends are invited to sign the guest register from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory. Memorials may be directed to the Veterans of the Cross-United Church of Christ or the Community Nursing Service. Harry Beaston Lake, Jr. was born on July 12, 1917 in Holden, Massachusetts, the eldest child of Harry Beaston Lake, Sr. and Bertha Flora (Lariviere) Lake. He graduated from Northborough High School in Massachusetts in 1935, and then spent the next four years working for H.L. Judd Co. of Wallingford, Connecticut. Harry attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska and served as a student pastor at Crete's Plymouth Congregational Church. On February 12, 1943 he married Lola Beery. Later that year he received his Bachelor's Degree from Doane. He was awarded the David Brainerd Perry Scholarship to Yale Divinity School, where he studied for three years. He later taught school in California for a year prior to returning to Yale, where he graduated in 1948. Ordained a minister in the Congregational Christian Church (later to become the United Church of Christ), he began his parish ministry in Red Cloud, Nebraska. Over the years, Harry and Lola served churches in Blaine County, Nebraska, Binger Oklahoma, Spring Valley, Wisconsin, Campbellstown, Ohio, North Hampton, Ohio, Lone Tree, Iowa, and finally Marshalltown, Iowa. After leaving full-time ministry, he went to work for Job Service of Iowa. He continued to serve various churches in Liscomb, Albion, Clemons, Melbourne, and Van Cleve as a temporary pastor. Harry was active in community activities that included the Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity and the Association for Retarded Children. He was the Secretary of the Community Nurses Board for 25 years, long-time chaplain of the Marshalltown Noon Optimist Club and one of the local founders of Head Start. He was also active in the Mayflower Home in Grinnell and the Iowa Conference of the United Church of Christ. He was an avid reader and an enthusiastic gardener. He is survived by his wife, Lola Lake; sons, David Lake of Glen Burnie, Maryland, Peter Lake of Anniston, Alabama, and Jonathon Lake of Sandstone, Minnesota; daughters, Mary Lake of Melbourneand Martha Lake of Melbourne; brothers, Richard Lake and Lester Lake, both of Wallingford, Connecticut; sister, Bertha Losi of Wallingford, Connecticut; five grandchildren, Michelle McCorkle, Kathy Quintana, Elizabeth Lake, George Lake and Roseanna Lake; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Dorothy Berry.
