Salisbury Post (online edition) Salisbury, NC February 11, 2005 The funeral is Saturday for Hazel Caroline Wood Lake, 90, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Feb. 8, 2005) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after five days of illness. Born Sept. 7, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lake, a daughter of the late James Thomas and Emma Coughenour Wood, was a graduate of Woodleaf High School. She was past president of Samuel C. Hart American Legion Auxiliary. During her term as president, the auxiliary won many awards, including the outstanding auxiliary in the state. She served two terms as president of 14th District Auxiliary. Mrs. Lake had more than 1,000 volunteer service hours at Hefner VA Medical Center. She was president of the Ladies Corbin Hills Golf Association and won the ladies golf championship several times. She provided transportation for the Rowan County American Legion Baseball Team before they got a bus. She was a member of Maupin Avenue Presbyterian Church. Her husband, James F. Lake, died Feb. 25, 1989. Survivors include daughter Peggy Swaringen Looney, Salisbury; sister Hilda Wood Eller, Salisbury; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster, pastor, Maupin Avenue Presbyterian Church. Burial, City Memorial Park. Visitation: None.
