The Des Moines Register Des Moines, Iowa 29 July 2009 HELEN LAKE Fremont Helen Lake, 93, formerly of Fremont, died at 10:38 a.m. July 27, 2009 at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehabilitation in Oskaloosa. She was born November 23, 1915 in Hedrick, Iowa to Arthur and Estella Palmer Millikin. On November 4, 1939 she married Earl Lake at Granite City, Missouri. They lived at Orient, Creston and Des Moines before moving to Fremont in 1951.A graduate of Fremont High School in 1933, she received her two year Standard Elementary teaching certificate from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1937. She taught two years at Pekin Rural School in Keokuk County and seven years at Zion Consolidated School in Orient and one year at Early, Iowa. She was a member of the First Christian Church, C.W.F. and Esther Circle at Oskaloosa, a 50 year member of Order of Eastern Star in Eddyville and 50 year member of Phi Mu National Sorority. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Dennis Swallow of Waukee, a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kathy Lake of Blue Grass, two granddaughters, Jill Swallow and Sally (Glen) Johnson and a great- granddaughter, Abigail. She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away January 9, 1977, her parents, two sisters, Ruth Akerman and Beatrice Millikin and four brothers, Forrest, Claude, John and Dwight Millikin. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa with Rev. Liz Colton officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be made to her church, First Christian Church of Oskaloosa.
