Topeka Capitol Journal; Topeka Ks; 2000-7-16 NETAWAKA (KS) -- Helen Louise SCHURLE, 83, Netawaka, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at a Leonardville (KS) nursing home. She was born Jan 9, 1917, in Philomont VA, the daughter of Fulton and Mary MARTINDALE LAKE. She lived in Baltimore from 1942 to 1946, and then in various communities in northeast Kansas before she moved to Netawaka in 1974. Mrs Schurle was a member of St Thomas Episcopal Church in Holton (KS), the Riley Home Demonstration Unit, and the Mill Creek Club. She married Norman A SCHURLE on Mar 1, 1942, in Washington DC. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Richard SCHURLE, Manhattan (KS); a daughter, Carolyn POTTORF, Highland (KS); seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A granddaughter, Renae Sue SCHURLE, died in 1994. Services will be at 1:30pm Tuesday at Holmes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley (KS). Burial will be in Riley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8pm Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leonardville Nursing Home and sent in care of the funeral home. She was born January 9, 1917, at Philomont, VA, daughter of Fulton and Mary (Martindale) Lake. Mrs. Schurle was a homemaker and a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Holton, the Riley HDU, and the Mill Creek Club. She was married to Norman A. Schurle March 1, 1942, at Washington, D.C. and they made their home at Baltimore. They moved back to Kansas in 2946, and farmed at Belvue, Sedalia, Westmoreland and Riley, before moving to a farm at Netawaka in 1974. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Evelyn George, in 1990, and by a granddaughter in 1994. Survivors include her husband, of the home; one son, Richard Schurle, Manhattan; one daughter, Carolyn Pottorf, Highland; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Holmes-Pfeifley Funeral Home, Riley, with the Rev. C. Conrad McNeer officiating. Burial was in Riley Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Leonardville Nursing Home.
