The Capital; Annapolis MD; 2008-11-5 Helen McMartin, a resident of Annapolis for the past 45 years, died Nov. 2 after a long illness. A native of Connecticut, Mrs. McMartin was the daughter of Peter and Georgia Lakis. She was a graduate of Boston University College of Fine Arts with degrees in Fine Arts and Education. Upon her graduation she taught art at St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vermont and later in Charlotte, Vermont Mrs. McMartin was a noted fine arts painter. Her characteristically large paintings represented bold efforts to capture the essence of landscape scenes and sailing events in a strong semi-abstract style. Her signature method of painting with oils utilized rich colors and a palate knife technique that lent a sculptured effect to her canvases. For years her works were sought after by many collectors in Annapolis and Vermont. She is survived by her husband, Philip McMartin of Annapolis, two sons, Philip McMartin of Annapolis, Jame McMartin of Easton; two daughters, Kathy Kinsey of Frederick and Keara McMartin of Pietrasanta, Italy. Friends and family may visit Thursday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Annapolis, MD 21401. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment is private.
