Published in the Stamford Advocate from 11/10/2005 - 11/12/2005. Stamford, CT HERMAN LAKE - died peacefully in his sleep on November 5, 2005 at the age of 84. Few people thought he looked older than 74. He was active to the end, lifting weights and taking political science courses at the University of Connecticut in Stamford. An avid swimmer throughout his life, he especially enjoyed covering long distances, whether it was back and forth across Glen Charlie Pond in Wareham, MA, helping his friend train to swim across the English Channel, or simply doing many laps in the pool. Born on July 31, 1921, he grew up in Brooklyn, where he played stickball and learned the value of a strong education, something he instilled in his children. A graduate of City College of New York, he went on to earn a Masters of Science in Meteorology from MIT in 1953. During World War II, he served in the Navy as a weatherman in the Pacific. He spent his career working in government and business as a scientist, and was one of the early environmental engineers. Although he was a quiet man, he is remembered by many for his pithy observations and amusing quips. He brought resilience, strength and optimism to life's challenges and opportunities. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Cecile D. Lake, to whom he was endlessly devoted. A dedicated family man, he is survived by his sons, Ron and Rick, as well as his daughter-in-law Pam, and grandchildren Ben and Emily. They meant more to him than tongue can tell. A funeral service will be held on Friday November 11 at 10:30 a.m., at Gallagher's Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Charter Oak Scholarships, c/o Center For Talented Youth, Johns Hopkins University, attention: Margaret Walsh, McAuley Hall, 5801 Smith Ave., Suite 400, Baltimore, MD, 21209-3611.
