She was born in Upper Pittsgrove Township, NJ on Feb. 23, 1915, daughter of the late Samuel C. and Bessie Lake, and had resided in Cromwell for several years having formerly lived in Clayton, NJ and Bridgeton, NJ. She graduated from Vineland High School and Cooper Hospital School of Nursing in 1936. Mrs. Wilkes worked as a registered nurse at both Cooper Hospital and Bridgeton Hospital, Bridgeton, NJ, before her retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Bridgeton, a member of Shoemaker Post 95, American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Bridgeton, NJ, and a mem- ber of Cooper Hospital Alumni Association. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Roberts of East Hampton; a son, Samuel H. and Barbara Mullen of Frederick, MD; five grandchildren, John William Herbst, Peter James Herbst, Sharron Mullen Pilson, Timothy Mullen, and Karren Mullen Sowell; a great-granddaughter, Kirra Pilson, a sister-in-law, Doris L. Lake and a niece Joyce Lake Tanyer. Several cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Horace M. Lake, and a sister and brother-in-law, Edith A. and Thomas G. Smith. The funeral service will be Thursday (Feb. 19), 10 a.m. Freitag Funeral Home, 137 West Commerce St., Bridgeton, N.J. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Millville, NJ. Friends may call at the Freitag Funeral Home, Thursday 9 a.m. until time of service. A Memorial Service will be Friday (Feb.20), 2 p.m. at Pilgrim Manor Campus Chapel, Missionary Road, Cromwell with the Rev. John Sandberg, officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Charity of Donors Choice or Benevolent Care Fund C/O Pilgrim Manor/Covenant Village, Missionary Road, Cromwell 06416.
