Sunday, October 24, 1999 - Gloucester County Times, Woodbury, NJ Death Notices (Photo of Jenkin Thomas Lake) LAKE, JENKIN THOMAS, age 80 years, of Clarksboro, NJ, died Thursday, October 21, 1999 at his home after a long illness from pancreatic cancer. Mr. Lake was born January 19, 1919 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He attended G.A.R. Memorial High School and graduated in 1937 where he was the head cheerleader. He then began a Machinist's apprenticeship with Glen Alden Coal Company. In 1940 he went to work for E.G. Budd Co., Phila., Pa. In March 1941 he began employment at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as a Machinist, Third Class. In September, 1942 (now a Machinist, Second Class), he volunteered to transfer to work as a Civilian Machinist, First Class in the Panama Canal Zone, which was considered the next logical target for Japanese bombing. In August 1943, he returned to the United States and volunteered to join the U.S. Army via the Voluntary Induction Program, serving 27 months. After the war he returned to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard where in July, 1951, he was promoted to Planner and Estimator, Machinist. In December, 1962, he was promoted again to GS-11, Assistant P&E Superintendent for Submarines and in July, 1967 to GS-12, Assistant Planning & Estimating Superintendent for Submarines, therefore becoming Senior Civilian for diesel Submarine Overhaul at the shipyard. As P&E Superintendent for Submarine Overhaul, he oversaw the overhaul of United States Submarines and those from the following countries: Turkey, Greece, Italy, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Spain & Iran. These assignments brought him many commendations, awards, and Outstanding Performance Ratings. He retired from Federal Civil Service after 40 years service in December 1980. He then went to work for Systems Engineering Associates Corp. as Administrator of the calibration program at the Naval Systems Engineering Center, located in the Philadelphia Naval Base, retiring after 5 years. In 1972 he became one of the original organizing members of the East Greenwich Ambulance Assn., Inc. This initiated a 22 year long involvement in Gloucester County Emergency Medical Service community. He eventually served as Training Officer, Vice-President, and President of this Association and was named Training Officer laureate. He became an EMT, EMT Instructor and National Registry EMT while instructing eleven full EMT courses at Gloucester County College. In 1973 he initiated and administered the Vial of Life Program for the next 26 years, having distributed over 50,000 vials in Gloucester County, turning the program over to officers of the Gloucester County Boy Scouts. This program is still sponsored by the Gloucester County Emergency Medical Services Council. In association with Underwood Memorial Hospital and the EMS Council, he designed and built ten sets of padded board splints for distribution by the EMS Council to local ambulance squads. He was also appointed to the original Advisory Board charged with building the Gloucester County Communications Center. He continued to serve as a Board Member for some years. He was past Vice-President of the Gloucester County Ambulance and Rescue Association. Mr. Lake was an avid hunter and salt water fisherman. He was a 50 year member of the National Rifle Association, a 56 year member of Lodge #61, Free and Accepted Masons in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the Recreational Fisherman's Alliance and the Anthony T. Calista V.F.W. Post #5579 of Gibbstown, N.J. He is survived by his wife Elsie Gindhart Lake, two daughters Gwen Anne Lake at home and Judith Osborn, his son-in-law James Osborn and two grandchildren Karen and Jimmy Osborn, all of Woodbury, N.J. The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 1999 in the McBRIDE-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 228 W. Broad St., Paulsboro, NJ. Interment Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro, NJ. Friends may call Friday eve 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday after 9 a.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home.
