Lake Sr., 71, of Binghamton, died in his sleep on Sunday, August 10, 2008, at the home of his son, Jim, in Plymouth, Mass., confident that the One he believed in as his personal Savior, Jesus Christ, would be with him in that hour. "For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day." (2Tim1:12). He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Dodge Lake; and his children and their spouses, John, Jr. and Donna Lake (LaCrosse, Wis.) and their children, Benjamin and Rebekah and her husband, Curtis; Jeffrey and Cynthia Lake (Binghamton) and their children, Patrick, Jennifer and Matthew; James and Lynn Bailey-Lake (Plymouth, Mass.) and their children, Andrew and Jocelyn; and Debbie and Philip Sweeney (Binghamton) and their children, Kaylie, Maxx, Megan VanVorce and Patrick Sweeney; Jose and Phiyen Olivares (Los Alamos, N.Mex.); and two great-grandsons, Elijah and Ethan; a brother and his wife, Hiram and Mary Lake (Rochester, Minn.); his mother-in-law, Mrs. Helen H. Dodge (Clayton, N.Y.); his brothers-in-law, Wilbur Dodge (Binghamton), David H. Dodge (Clayton, N.Y.), Peter and Bernadette Dodge (Ithaca, N.Y.); sister-in-law, Caroline Dodge Fisher (Westford, Mass.); and many nieces and nephews. His career as a Certified Housing Manager included periods with American Baptist Management in Staten Island, N.Y., the Binghamton Housing Authority and Port Liberte Development on New York Harbor. He was a charter member of both the New York State Public Housing Authorities Directors Association and National Housing Authority Directors Association. He was a former member of many civic and service organizations in the Binghamton community, including the Rotary, Lions Club and American Red Cross. He was a longstanding member of both Main Street Baptist Church and Boulevard United Methodist Church, where he was active in their music ministries and other administrative positions. Friends may visit the family at the Barber Memorial Home, 428 Main Street, Johnson City, on Thursday, August 14, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, August 15, at 11:00 a.m. at Boulevard United Methodist Church, 113 Grand Boulevard, Binghamton. Friends wishing to make a memorial donation are asked to consider the Boulevard United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or the American Heart Association.
