Sioux City Journal; Sioux City IA; 2001-4-28 Joyce Lake LE MARS, Iowa - Joyce Lake, 69, of Le Mars died Friday, April 27, 2001, at her residence as a result of pancreatic cancer. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Revs. Jean Morse and Gary Landsness officiating. Bu-rial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Mrs. Lake was born Nov. 2, 1931, in Le Mars, the daughter of Oscar and Margaret (Borchers) Peters. She was baptized in St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Merrill. She attended Johnson Township #5 school and graduated from Le Mars High School. After attending Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Neb., she taught first grade in Merrill for one year. She married Donald J. Lake on Aug. 10, 1952, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. They farmed north of Merrill for 31 years until their retirement in 1983, when they moved to Le Mars. She was a homemaker, 4-H leader and Sunday school teacher in her early adult years. Later she volunteered at Wells Visitor Center, Floyd Valley Hospital Gift Shop and Brentwood Good Samaritan Center Auxiliary. She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing cards, baking, traveling and attending Elderhostels. Survivors include her husband; four daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Kenneth Becicka of Alvin, Ill., Carol and Mick Snell of Hampton, Iowa, Dianne and Joseph Rotta of Merrill, and Nancy and Brian Balm of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, Troy and Todd Becicka, Ryan and Jared Snell, Andrew, Lynnae and Melissa Rotta, Kelli, Alexander and Taylor Balm; and a sister and her husband, Lois and Robert Lancaster of Le Mars. She was preceded in death by her parents.
