Winston-Salem Journal; Winston-Salem NC; 1999-11-4 & 1999-11-5 LAKE ARBOR ACRES -- Julian Lake, a resident of Arbor Acres, died at his home early Wednesday morning, November 3, 1999. Dr. Lake was born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 26, 1907. He was the son of Frank Greer and Mary Irene Burr Lake. He had four brothers and two sisters who are all deceased. He graduated from Davidson College in 1928 and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va. in 1931. He studied at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem in 1932, Princeton Theological Seminary in 1955 and the American Summer Institute in St. Andrews, Scotland in 1970 and 1975. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Roberta Gilmour Lake. His children are Julian Gilmour Lake and Elizabeth Lake Orr both of Winston-Salem, Robert Janney Lake (deceased) and Margaret Scott Lake Lindsay of Charlotte. His grandchildren are London Lake Pickett of Winston-Salem, Lydia Sheppard Lake of Arlington, Virginia, Charles Lamb Cauthen, Jr., Elizabeth Gilmour McLean, and Catherine Lake Cauthen of Charlotte, Robert Scott Lake, M.D. of Chicago, Julia Dunham Lake of Lyon, France, David Scott Lindsay, Jr. of Greenville, South Carolina, Sarah Elizabeth Lindsay of Atlanta, and Margaret Lee Lindsay of Charlotte. He has seven great-grandchildren. He was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister on July 21, 1931 in Warrenton, Virginia and received his Doctor of Divinity degree form Davidson College in 1945. He served the Warrenton Presbyterian Church in Warrenton, Virginia from 1931 until 1938, the Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rack Hill, South Carolina from 1938 until 1945, the First Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Tennessee from 1945 until 1949, the First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem from 1949 until 1962, the Brownson Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, North Carolina from 1962 until 1968, and the Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina until his retirement in 1972. Since his retirement, he served seven interim pastorates throughout the southeast. He was a volunteer chaplain at Forsyth Memorial Hospital primarily on the cancer floor during the 1980's and 1990's. He was a life member of the Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club. He organized and was the Chairman of Bristol and the Winston-Salem Preaching Missions which attracted some of the greatest religious speakers of that time to these communities. He had been a member of the Board of Trustees at Davidson College, St. Andrews College, and Union Theological Seminary. He was president of the Arbor Acres Resident Council. There will be a family graveside service on Friday, November 5, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at Forsyth Memorial Park and a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian. Church in Winston-Salem. The family will remain after the service to greet friends at the church.
