Lake, 94, of Glenwood Avenue, New London, died Wednesday, (June 19, 2002) at the home of Everett and Kathryn Maggs in Charlestown, RI. Mrs. Lake was born August 22, 1907, in Goshen, IN, the daughter of Clarence Swartzbaugh and Ada Berkfield Swartzbaugh. She was the widow of Captain Richard C. Lake, USN, whom she married on December 21, 1929, in Goshen, IN. Captain Lake died in 1953. A 1927 graduate of the Teachers College of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, IN, Mrs. Lake held various teaching positions prior to her marriage to Captain Lake. During her marriage, she accompanied her husband to numerous duty stations, including China, the Philippine Islands, and the Panama Canal Zone, as well as stateside naval bases. Mrs. Lake worked as a Navy Relief Volunteer at the New London Submarine Base during World War II. Following Captain Lake's death, Mrs. Lake returned to teaching as the director of the Wee Dolphin Nursery School at the Submarine Base, and she continued in that position for 25 years until her retirement in 1977. Mrs. Lake was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in New London. Mrs. Lake is survived by a daughter, Patricia L. Tracey of New London; a son, Richard C. Lake of Enfield; five grandchildren in addition to Mrs. Maggs, including Julia L. Feder of Guilford, Peter L. Tracey of Washington, DC, Richard C. Lake of Enfield, Margaret T. Barlow of Quaker Hill, and Carol L. Albright of Enfield; and 14 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service and interment are planned for a later date at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolic, MD. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Save the Music Foundation, 1515 Broadway, 20th Floor, New York, NY 10036. The Cremation Society of Rhode Island is in charge of arrangements.
