Iron County Reporter Iron River MI March 12 2008 PENGILLY, Minn.-Laurence "Larry" Arvid Lake, 80, died March 2, 2008 at his home. He was born Dec. 20, 1927 in Montreal, Wis. to Arvid and Henna Lake. He had been a resident of Pengilly since 1969, moving from Iron River. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley, Wis. and then served in the Navy during World War II. He was discharged from the Armed Forces in May of 1946. He then attended the Platteville School of Mining where he received his B.A. degree in Mechanical Engineering. After finishing school, he worked for M.A. Hanna, first in Michigan and then in Minnesota. He later retired from National Steel Pellet Co. after 37 years of service. After his retirement from National Steel, he founded and managed the Hope House in Grand Rapids, Minn. for 10 years. He also was on the Hospital Board in Grand Rapids. He was a member of the VFW Post 8831 of Pengilly, the Nashwauk American Legion Post 307 in Nashwauk, a past Master of the Masonic Lodge, and was also a proud member of AA for over 30 years. He was a very active member of the Nashwauk Lutheran Church where he held many offices throughout his life. One of his favorite pastimes was just spending time at his home on Swan Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Bette in 2003; a daughter Laureen Vernon; a brother Roy; and two sisters, Henna Mae Lindberg and Marie Giachino. He is survived by two sons, William (Nancy) of Nashwauk and Larry (Nancy Dewar) of Taconite, Minn.; a daughter Sharon (Tim) Sweet of Florence, Ore.; two sisters, Jeanette Frederickson of Ironwood and Esther Paynter of Marshfield, Wis.; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles. Funeral services were held March 7 at the Nashwauk Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jean Megorden officiating. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
