Providence Journal; Providence RI; 2011-9-17 GOVAIN, MARY ELIZABETH (LAKE) 83 years old, died on Wednesday in Charlton Hospital, Fall River. Born in Providence, RI daughter of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Burns) Lake. She was a 1949 graduate of Brown University. Mrs. Govain was a high school and elementary school teacher in New London, CT; and the Gardner, Raynham, Bridgewater and Taunton. She has been a resident of the greater Taunton area for the past 30 years. A Communicant of St Ann's Church in Raynham she was a founding CCD teacher there. She served her alma mater with distinction, having been President of her Class for a decade through her 25th reunion. With a primary focus on her family, she also served the communities where she lived in various capacities. She was active in the American Red Cross, the United Fund, and youth educational programs, and was a strong advocate for the education for the underprivileged and disadvantaged throughout her life. She was active in community theater in Gardner, assuming both governance and artistic leadership roles. Mary enjoyed visiting lighthouses and spending many a vacation in Bermuda with her husband. She was the wife, for the past 60 years, of Frederick Govain, retired Chief of the Annawon Council, Boy Scouts of America, now living in Somerset. Mary is the mother of Keith Govain and his wife June of Raynham and Royal Govain of Montreal, Canada. She is the grandmother of Kelly Govain of Williamsburg, VA; Julie Govain of West Bridgewater and Jennifer Govain of West Bridgewater. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St Ann's Church, Raynham, on Monday at 9AM. Visiting hours on Sunday from 4-8 PM in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave. (Route 138 south) Taunton. Interment Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI.
